    For those sad souls who can't get the angling monkey off their backs and have chosen to live well above the seasonal freezing line, winter can easily slide into a cornucopia spilling over with bountiful excuses. Much like the traveling charlatan preacher for whom the mind is willing but the flesh is weak - we want to fish, but all that whiteness, especially when it's traveling horizontally past the window, is a daunting thing.

    Wild huckleberries grew atop Blood Mountain. These were unripe and amazingly bitter, but further down, ripe purple and blue ones could be mistaken for miniature blueberries (which are closely related).

    The shelter was very small, built by the CCC in the 1930s. The chimney had been partially bricked up inside but people still made fires. As you can see, it doesn't have much of a view, but at least it is out of the weather. There are no screens, doors, or windows.

  • Replacing the Fishing Vest

    My fishing vest must weigh thirty pounds. It contains enough aircraft-aluminum fly boxes that, in need, I could flatten them and assemble a Boeing 747, with enough left over for a Cessna or two. Add to that my Oxygen tank and you understand my ads in the Pennysaver for three on-call Gillies or one Sherpa-lite.


    Well, thanks to the folks at DARPA (whose last known useful invention was the Internet -- and we know how that turned out) and Boston Dynamics, my Uber-Gillie is now available.

  • Foxtail Crab (claw variation)
    I posted the Foxtail Crab back in July. Testing on the pattern has been very good. It's durable, casts well and fish pick it up. I've been very intrigued by a pattern variation though that I wanted to share. It's the claw variation that you see here. I'm not big on complicated flies nor am I interested in photo realistic flies but this pattern has produced. We'll see how it goes over a longer period of time. So far so good. Stay...

    I fished for bass too, catching most of them on a bunny worm and - late in the day - two more on a deer hair bug.

  • Rubbing It In

    No fishing last night despite the call to pursue a white fly hatch.  It only took one day of being in college to get that call.  You know the one.

    “White flies are happening, are you in?”

    “No, I’ve got a bunch of reading to do”

    No writing for me today either, still more studying to stay on top of.  I have to admit though, I’m enjoying the subject matter.

  • Sleep Deprivation for Salmon and Sea Trout

    My pal has been asking me when I am going to write up the trip report for our mammoth Salmon and Sea Trout session.

    Mid July we went to a river up North - a nice private beat which usually fishes very well. It was craziness - we stayed awake for a ridiculous amount of time. Essentially getting up at 0600 on Friday morning and then trying to stay awake until Saturday night at 2400 (no fishing on the Sabbath) does funny things to ones mind. It bends it - in funny ways.
