McGuane, Montana, and Geezer Awards


Author Tom McGuane will be honored with the Emeritus distinction of the High Plains Book Awards on Saturday in Billings. It's something that he jokes sounds a lot like a prize for geezers.

Spanning a 43-year career, McGuane has made a living writing novels, screenplays, short stories, and magazine articles—including an upcoming feature for The Drake. He also chased tarpon (and skirts) in an unwashed 70s-era Key West and has long since settled down with his wife, Laurie, on their property near McLeod, MT. Between writing, ranching, and fishing, at age 72 he says there are still more miles in the tank.

“It’s hard to stay inside in the summer in Montana."
