A few days after posting that last TR I realized it wasn't from opening day after all, I was a week early because I marked the wrong Saturday in the calendar. (Nice enough guy, but not too smart....)

Managed to get out a week later on the real opener, and again last Sunday. Found a bunch of new pools, most of which held fish. Sorry for the fuzzy quality of some of the pictures, didn't know it at the time but I was having trouble holding the camera steady. More on that later.

I had packed a great lunch. After fishing for several hours I still wasn’t hungry, so I kept going upstream.

Saw probably two dozen of these, this was one of the biggest.

As I got further upstream more deadfall blocked entire sections of the water. But it also helped create some beautiful little pools.

Started feeling tired around lunch time, still no appetite. Kept going because it was all new water for me.

In one of the new pools I hooked a small rainbow, maybe 5”, and as I landed it another one about the same size followed it all the way to my hand, then bolted. So I figured there was at least one more fish in the pool.

Five or six drifts later I still hadn’t raised that second fish so I figured I was done with the pool…then the largest fish I have ever seen in this stream, at least 9”, swam out from under a log, casually rose to the surface, took the fly, and turned back toward his lair. When I set he went completely mental, tore around the pool several times, put a real bend in the 2wt. Got him to hand and promptly dropped him as I reached for the camera so, alas, no photo. But now I know where he lives.

…and skinnier….

…until it split into two tiny streams. I hiked up each for a while and found several tiny pools, but no fish. So I started to fish my way back downstream.

About fifteen minutes later I realized something was wrong…I couldn’t focus, was really tired. Felt like my boots weighed about 20 lbs. each. Decided I had better call it a day. By the time I got back to the truck I had to sit down and go to sleep. I barely remember the drive home, other than stopping to give up my breakfast at the halfway point. The next eight hours were easily the most miserable of my life, my first experience with food poisoning. Slept all night, and all day Monday….by dinnertime Monday I was back to normal, felt as if it never happened.

Can’t wait to go back and look for that big boy way upstream.

That's a banana slug, you can't see it well in the photo but they have a head much like a snail. It's also the mascot of UC-Santa Cruz. Banana slugs eat a lot of mushrooms (just like the UCSC students).

Many thanks!!! Damn thing looks huge.

Fish some small creeks in New Mexcio which happen to my favorite thing to do with a fly rod (after saltwater). That old growth looks fantastic. Throw in some wierd looking invertebrates and think you got a cool looking experience there.

Thanks again for the post. Completely enjoyed seeing those waters!!

A friend's cabin was available for the long weekend so we headed into the mountains to cap off the summer. Most rivers in the area were blown out at least through late June. But by Labor Day weekend many of the "blue lines" on my USFS maps had run dry, so I had to cover a lot of ground to find water and trout.

On the way I saw some nice scenery...

...an old bear trapper's cabin...

...and lots of really tall tree stumps.

This time of year the combination of steep terrain and no rain confines the fish to a series of pools in most of the small streams around here. The fish are wild, mostly small, and they tend to spook easily. But with the reduced flows they're not seeing a lot of food, so they're not particularly selective.

At first glance this stream looked long on rocks and short on water and fish.
