The estuary I live on is as good as any place on the planet in terms of numbers of redfish. The one thing we do miss here however is a consistent opportunity to sight fish to bulls. In this part of LA all of the marsh is interior and we have no barrier islands. The bulls will travel up into the ship channel and into the lake, but we don't see them moving into the shallow marsh.

Early tomorrow my buddy Devin and I are heading east to the delta. We'll fish tomorrow and Monday looking for big bulls. I've been tying flies and leaders all week.

When I started tying I didn't have a lot of 2/0 hooks so I ordered some. While waiting for them to come in I remembered that I had a big pile of Mustad circle hooks I had so I tied some flies on them, may as well see if they work. I do have standard hook versions of all of them as well...

Nice bugs.

All the best to you and Devin down south.

Had a buddy go and said they manged thirty or so. 10-15 over 20lbs.

Damn fine stuff if you can catch the weather right

Look forward to the report

I don't know much about reds, but this year I started tying small streamers for big brown trout on some owner circle hooks I had lying around and they have worked great..just had to train myself to let the fish hook itself..good luck down there..

Blue ridge,

I've talked to some folks that have used them for different saltwater fish, they said that really it's not so different, you can get away with a strip strike, just no rod lifting trout sets.

Tied clousers on circle hooks for wipers. Never had one come un-buttoned. They pretty much hook themselves on circle hooks.

Those are fine looking flies, RC... I do believe they'd fish well on smallmouth and musky as well.

Good luck, I'm looking forward to seeing how you guys do.

I've tied on circle hooks for much the same reason (that was all I had). Did not see a problem with them.

In all my time I've never been fishing for Red's. They are on my list of must do fishing. One day I'll find an excuse to get down to the Gulf and see what its like. I like the idea of site fishing for big fish. We do it here with Stripers and Blues and it is the best. You sit in your kayak or boat, waiting to see bait fish break the surface or something disrupt the surface of the water. Often it is something that would go unnoticed by most who are not fishermen. You cast to the spot and BAM! All of a sudden all hell breaks loose and you are on to something big. It becomes a Nantucket sleigh ride as you get pulled along, waiting for fish to tire out. You can't believe how much power is in one of those fish, dragging you and your boat along.

All I can do now is dream about it as the cold sets in. fall chores are building up and I won't get a chance to see the salt until Thanksgiving weekend.

Jed,

If you ever do make it south look me up and you've got spot on my boat, I'm just 2 hours out of Houston so it ain't a bad trip. The area we'll be fishing in will be water in the 2 foot range for these big fish, and we'll actually be seeing the fish...of course the fact that they are red helps. The stuff I'm normally fishing in around here is usually less than a foot, backs and tails sticking out of the water..very visual. Redfish are the strippers of the fish world, they like to show a lot of themselves above the water line.
