I've got some colleagues who worked at the Savannah River Radio-ecology Lab (SREL)(http://www.srel.edu/facilities.html) at the Savannah River Site (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savannah_River_Site) for several years. This place is serious when it comes to reptiles and fish due to the many decades of thermal pollution on the cooling "ponds". They inducted me into the lab by allowing me to fish a vary famous "pond" which shall remain nameless, but only if I would help them do their "gatoring" at night.

These guys always placed the skulls on ant hills and covered them with a bucket or cooler (weighted to keep the bigger varmints away), and came back in a couple of weeks to find beautifully clean specimens.
