I walked into the front room and dropped two rod tubes onto the floor.

Wife: “Are you going fishing?”

Me: “Yep.”

Wife: “But you promised me you’d wrap up the taxes this weekend.”

Me: “I will. I’m just putting a few things together for my brother’s lake trip.”

Wife: “But that’s over two weeks away.”

Me: “Never too early to start the gear pile. Besides, I’m camping this year, and I want to make sure I don’t forget anything.”

Wife: {Lets out a sigh like Heero.} "Fine. Just leave me some room so I can water my orchids."

Me: “Of course.”

I pulled up to my buddy Neil’s house a little before 6:00 AM Thursday morning. We’d loaded the bulk of our gear into his truck the night before, so a few minutes later we were on the road.

We’ve had a very dry winter.

After stopping for breakfast, gas, ice, groceries, fly fishing necessities, camping permits, and fishing licenses, we finally made it to the lake and the beach we’d be camping at.

My brother and several of the others he’d invited arrived shortly after we did.

After I hooked and lost my second fish, my buddy Neil said, “What in the hell is wrong with you?”

Me: “I keep hitting them with my permit set and they keep coming unbuttoned.”

Neil: “Your what?”

Me: “Never mind.”

Neil: “So what are you getting them on?”

Me: “A black and red shrimp fly.”

Neil: “A what?”

Me: “A black and red shrimp fly.”

{Cast the fly over to Neil’s ladder so he can pick it up and look at it.}

Neil: “That doesn’t look like any shrimp fly I’ve ever seen.”

Me: “You’re preaching to the choir, Neil.”

Neil: “How much of that Jameson have you had today?”

Me: “Not enough. You want some?”

Neil: “Maybe later.”

I came down off the ladder, and as I was making my way to shore, Neil hooked up with his first fish.

We fished until dark, but caught nothing else.

That night we feasted on grilled prawns and rib eye steaks, followed by a Montecristo and a few tumblers of Lagavulin for dessert.

I’d gotten permission from my brother to invite a few guests, and had extended invitations to augustwest, DizzyDean and Spicytuna. August and Dizzy had prior commitments, but tuna was game and said he’d be coming up with a buddy of his on Thursday night.

I tried to wait up for them but the scotch got the better of me and I crawled into my tent a little after eleven, hoping that tomorrow would be a better day.

(To be continued)

Clearly the key to fishing this place is the piece of plywood to put under the rocking chair.

One question:
Regarding the prawns that y'all grilled- were they black & red?

Fuck it might as well just throw in what I got for now till the camera makes it back.

Joe you and your crew were first class and the hospitality was greatly appreciated. The food itself was worth the trip.

This is how it started:

We rolled in around 12:30 am but could have been earlier if I knew it was Rib Eye's and Prawns for dinner the first night :gun

Woke up in some cool country

Then it was time to get after it:

My buddy stuck this nice fish the first night:

Then as the sun set it was time to get ready for dinner:

Look there is Joe wading out, on the far end of the line

More to follow, including a float with Dizzy from Sunday, so be patient fukrs
