Opening day, eh!

Post by BobLoblaw » Thu Jun 18, 2015 11:53 am

[report]I reckon it's 'bout time this feller posts up some new content, such as it is.
First, this; just 'cuz I love what these folks are doing...

June 16th is opening day on much of the flowing waters in the mountains/foothills of Southern Alberta.
I've been looking forward to that day since I closed out the season, catching my last fish after dark on closing day, October 31st.
In between, I did some ice fishing, a bit of Bow River fishing, & even got some walleye on the fly rod...
Image

Image

On the way back from walleye fishing, I passed a local stocked pond.
Decided to stop for a few casts.
Image

Damn, that ain't no rainbow trout!
Image

Extremely fugly, didn't fight worth shit; what's not to love about grass carp?
Image

Managed a few of the prettier residents of the pond; a few overwinter & get to a fun size...
Image

Image

Hang on; let's stop & smell the flowers...

Spent a day chasing cutts at a lake in the Rockies...

The plan was to fish a favorite creek with my buddy, J, on opening day. We headed down south after work on June 11th to do some scouting.
All the rivers & creeks we saw looked good for this time of year; a dry spring had most water looking more like midsummer clarity than typical spring flows. Of course, we brought our gear & fished a cool little pond on our trip!
Made a short, steep hike to the pond.
Walked around to the far end, where a person can actually wade out & fish; most of the shoreline has trees/bush right to the water & a quick drop-off.
Image

I drew first blood...
Image

Then, J got one...
Image

J's first ever Arctic Grayling was also the first fish to bend his new rod, his first ever build...
Image

This pond winterkilled a while back & was restocked a couple years ago; fish aren't big (yet), but were very willing & fun on the 2wt.
Oops!

Image

After about 30 grayling to hand, it was time to head back down the mountain...
Image

Only a few more sleeps 'til opening day!
And, then, it was.
We both worked the midnight shift this week, so the plan was- work all night, fish all day.
Took two vehicles 'cuz J had to be back in town for an appointment much earlier than I planned to leave the creek.
I had already booked the next night off work, so no need to sleep at all.
My enthusiasm was barely even dampened when I narrowly avoided a high speed crash before I got to the city limits; some stunned broad
thought it would be a good idea to change lanes right into my car. Luckily, one of us was alert enough to avert disaster.
Then, pulled up at the creek to the sound of one of J's tires losing air in a hurry; had to change that before hitting the water.
Fished one of our favorite stretches without a sign of a fish.
Plan B time.
Had better luck at our next stop.
J got a rainbow right under the bridge, while I landed one at the next pool up...
Image

Image

Lots of li'l brookies in here, too...
Image

Ran into this feller, out rounding up some cows; hella nice dude...
Image

No big fish, but we got plenty of feisty rainbows & brookies; most on dries, a few on my dropper nymph...
Image

Some super pretty fish...
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

STOP!
Flower time!
Image

Image

More trout...
Image

Image

Image

My buddy headed back to town & I carried on.
My favorite fish of the day; this one catapulted completely out of the water on the eat & is rather gorgeous...
Image

Image

Image

Picked up a few more brookies...
Image

Image

Damn clear water...
Image

Image

Decided to head back to town, with a short stop at another creek on the way.
This creek will be a tiny, algae-infested trickle by late summer;
pretty healthy flow right now, though...
Image

Stung a decent fish on a dry on the very first cast.
Then, nothing.
Real nice water, no fish.
Changed to a small streamer to fish a couple deeper pools with some deadfall in 'em.
Had a fish chase in the 2nd pool; he ate real good on the next cast.
The 2wt was torqued pretty good, trying to keep this fish outta the wood.
Got him in the net, though...
Image

Image

Image

Image

Definitely fought above his weight class, this bull trout!
Sent him on his way, to go back to terrorizing the 'bows & whitefish...
Image

'Twas a good note to end the day on, so I packed 'er in & headed back to the city.
Managed a double-header of rainbows on the way (2nd one is kinda faint, but it's right at the left side of the bridge)...
Image

Here's hoping the season only gets better from here!
My darling wife is out of town this weekend; gonna try to fish at least 2 out of the 3 days.
Let's see what happens...

Walleye on the fly, eh? How does one do that? I am going to Canada-land next month and everyone has been telling me that they're too deep to catch on a fly. :cool
