The act of steelheading TR- pg7

Post by -G- » Mon Nov 28, 2016 11:49 am

The past few years I had grown a touch sour of our Great Lakes steelhead fishery. Because everyone knows they aren't 'real', sink tips are usually a must, as are skagit/scandi short heads. Too much kool-aid perhaps.

But then Dan and I took a trip out west and got to fish for, and hold a few real wild steelhead. One of the many things that trip taught me is that steelhead fishing is actually very little about the precious steelheads themselves. It's actually an act . An act that I had fallen back in love with.

This thought kind of inspired an adventure to new, remote water for Dan and I this fall. Water where we would be fishing for fish that came into the river that night. Water where we could hear the waves on the shoreline as our flies swung. Water were we would see no one, and feel a little lost.

Steelheading, is an act of adventure.

An act of solitude.

An act of executing an extremely well practiced motion, you've invested much time into learning.

An act of anticipation.

An act of campfire diners.

An act of growing steelhead mustaches.

An act of making tailgate french press.

An act of going as far as you can by truck.

And then the act of doing the last 3 miles on foot.

An act of admiration. And an act of getting rewarded.

An act of celebration.

Lastly, an act of remembrance.
