That chicken I posted a pitcher of last died New Years morning. She had gotten sick -- I suspect she was sick when I trapped her end of November, but I didnt catch it very early as I had no basis of 'normal' since she was a fresh bird -- and I was able to treat her after some vet visits and stuff. She improved and was flying again, but a secondary illness came on hard and fast, probably from weakened immune system from the first, and she declined too quick to fight it, even with my best efforts and a vets help.
Really disappointing. Never lost one before but in the end she had a better chance fighting it with me that she would have in the wild.
I have this new one now as of yesterday. Shes a first year bird just like my girl that didnt make it, born in the wild last spring. A neglected chicken -- albeit, neglected maybe on account of this guy going thru some difficulties (no excuse IMO), but neglected nonetheless. I will get her flying and killing stuff, I think. Its a long story...
I think she is going to be a good chicken, and, quite frankly, she is lucky to be with me now as I'll actually have her doing what is in her nature. I really dont know how this happened, but this was maybe kindve fate for the both of us. And that guy that had her before me...man, I am so fired up about a few things. This isnt the place to air my grievances, but that guy sucks. Fuck him, tho, she is in a better place.
I think we will get a few grouse and huns and maybe a pheasant before the falconry season ends at the end of March, and she will definitely kill a bunch of pigeons.
