All dogs, pointing or not, should be allowed to keep their tails, but most of the German shorthairs I have seen were amputees.

Adams and RH, point taken.To clear the air let me make certain you all know the shorthairs belong to a close friend. He is a geezer and hardheaded, but I will certainly pass on to him the take from the Drake. I have hunted with his dogs for nearly a decade and never missed their tail, never hit it either. I am not one who would avoid a setter or a English Pointer in a hunting situation, it just happens there are a dozen shorthairs close by, fed by someone else that I get to use for birds. What I do own are chesapeakes, for 12 years; I have two that reside here at present time. I am certain the long tailed canines are superior in your eyes for pointing, I am also certain that I will always feed brown curly dogs and maybe one day setter.The debate on breed is lengthy and life is too short. So pass the chillum and know that I dont care about dog tails.Tell me a dog tale instead.

I had a Chesapeake for 13 years. n Smart, devoted, and stubborn as hell. My hat is off to you, in respect and in sympathy. To be outnumbered by Chesapeakes, you either love the breed or are a glutton for punishment. Probably both. :(

Gaper-n At the risk of being called a kissass, Your reports from Alaska friggin rock!And let me apologize for the language barrier.Basically I am saying that in the world of side by side shotguns the one I shoot is not always held in esteem. It is a NID (New Ithaca Double) or an Ithaca. The snails ears are cocking indicators, and age the gun as a pre 1932 post 1928 (i think28) gun. This means it can shoot modern cartridges because it is proofed to withstand the modern pressures in factory loaded shells. The fencepost comment refers to the way some folks say the gun appears and handles. n The 20 ga Uggie or Ugartechea is another gun, n Ugartechea is the manufacturer and is based out of Spain. Feeidng it a diet is nothin more than pushing shells into the side by side barrells shooting at doves and reloading again. We were in a drift boat and after smallies, but found a tributary creek that held a nice pod of bows with their feed buckets on. I think I remember 17 casts brought 14 fish to the boat, anyone guess what type of dog is in that boat? Coastal trash from the surf. I basically throw a cast net in the bay at sunrise, and take live minnows to the beach so the boys can feel a feesh tug, between sand castle building and boarding..

I love those old "knockaround" doubles. My 12 was purchased by my great grandad and is an LC Smith field grade from the 20s maybe early 30s. I use it on grouses, woodCoCs, and pheasants. My granddad and dad never shot it so it was just about brand freakin new when it made its way to me. Nice to see some birdy pics, thanks.
