There's something about a native fish. Not just wild, but fish that are "supposed" to be there. Fish that were there before all the bipeds started spreading stuff around. I'm not immune to the attraction of "big" fish, or even "lots" of fish. But natives are something special.
Last year, on the way back from a fishless trip to Canada with Surly, we made a little side trip. I had mentioned that I'd never caught a brook trout in its native water. He has a camp in the eastern mountains that is surrounded by brook trout water. An hour stop, a few casts, and I had a "native" brook trout under my belt. But what with all the road burn and sleep deprivation that go along with a major expedition, it wasn't really an immersion in the country. We made plans to change that this fall:
