Earlier this year when I heard that SouthernStrain and his bride would be working in West Yellowstone for the summer I told E-Socks that we were going. No wimping out, no “I’m too broke”, no bullshit, we were going. Then came Covid. With no working, I sure as fuck had time. Just couldn’t fly. But then things eased up. Socks and I picked some dates, SS approved them and I bought the plane tickets before either could change their minds. The warden was not too happy about it, we are caring for her mom as well and she is in the higher risk group, but we were going. We hit the ground in Bozeman looking for liquor stores to set up out mobile bar, aka the rental car, ate burgers in the back parking lot of a strip club and headed south. 90 minutes later we had caught the first fish of the trip. What followed was a blur of fishing and drinking and sleeping. Up at 6, fish all day, cocktails and sunsets, eat food at 9 and then sleep. Wake up and repeat. SS managed to get off 4 days in a row. We fished a lake, one big river, so many small creeks, so many. These young bucks tried to kill this old man each day by hiking out to creeks 3 miles off trail thru thigh high grass. I was beat up but it was so worth it. We caught fish every day, I caught my biggest brown trout ever, my biggest cutthroat ever, quickly followed by my real biggest cutty ever. The last day of fishing was an amazing day, we caught 6 cutties over 20 inched in 30 minutes! It was insane.
Yes, I occasionally do fish.
Anyways, here are some photos, lots of photos, in no particular order.
