My father used to raise bison, and he would collect their shed off the barbed wire fences and give me bags of it because he knew I tied flies.

It was very difficult to work with - wiry and full of burrs - but I managed to dub some onto some hooks, and caught some trout with the end result, so I can appreciate how gratifying it must have felt to catch that big beautiful steelhead with a fly that included pheasant tails from a bird your father raised.
