Hillbilly Highsider? Gheenoe redux

Post by SnuffBox » Sun Aug 24, 2014 1:26 pm

[report]

Some of you will remember a Thalweg's TR titled Shadow Country from some years ago. In it you will see the pic below. That's me in a Gheenoe purchased second-hand for that trip.

While it survived the Glades, damage was done.
Started the rebuild last winter, fished her this summer.
Check it out... or not.

Harley Gheen established Gheenoe manufacturing in 1970 in Titusville, FL. My understanding is that attempts were made to expand production and Harley sent molds to Spider Boats in AR (and one other place in TN, I think). Not sure about details, but the deal went south and the guys at Gheenoe sited quality issues.
So, she's not from FL, but she genuine enough for me. A Hillbilly Highsider, but a Highsider nonetheless.

Image

I took a shit-ton of pictures of the work, but chose just enough to show the process. Nearly all the inspiration and instructions/advice came from either microskiff or customgheenoe sites.
Fiberglass and epoxy work were pretty new to me, so I learned a lot. I bet I spent as much time just standing & staring at it, working it all out in my head, as I did actually working on it.

Outboard and Tmotor stay home for float trips. Used them both for white bass this spring, lost the pics.

Not too bad.

Badass Asshattery, your shop alone is worth the price of admission. Then it just takes off from there.

That came out real nice
frustrated. After a few "what the fucks?" "i suck"s and a break on shore I convinced her to get back to casting. I clearly remember this question/statement "so you actually think this is fun. These fish are fucked"

Badass, I've been fortunate to spend a lot of time in and to catch a shit ton of redfish out of my buddy's Gheenoe highsider. Awesome little boats.
