Bunch of good ideas here and none of 'em have made it to Austria yet.

Mitch,
Photo tables are sold by a bunch of outfits, but they are way overpriced. Aren't you a construction guy good with your hands? Make one. The idea behind the tables curves is so there are no corners which can create lighting "problems". Get a piece of lucite and mount it to a jig. If you are looking for something like I used check out Amvona.com or one of the other daily deal sites. I picked mine up for damn cheap. I got a photo table instaed of a light box because there are fewer size limitations in what you can shoot.

If there is anything that makes the difference it is a nice diffused light source, good depth of field, and a solid foundation for the shutter release.I usually just wing it with the P&S, but for detailed stuff I use a tripod with a remote release and off camera flash.

For the shots:
Use a tripod
Put the camera in aperature priority mode and set to f/8 or smaller, and
Use an off-camera flash with a diffuser above the table.

If you want me to keep my eyes open for a I deal, I'd be happy to. PM me your price range - I'm sure it's sky high since you're a baller.

Why do you need the off camera flash with the two overhead lights, just to give more lateral detail to the fly?

Generally yes. I lay one of the Ott lights down and shine the other down behind the fly. They aren't mounted so you can move them around. Light from behind highlights the edges. The small flash fills it all in. I'm using an off-camera cord because it allows me to point it anywhere.

Vacu posted something different in one of the big streamer tying threads with studio lights. HIs results were great as you might expect.

Bounce flash & a sheet of paper:

A pair of softboxes:

If you have a flash you can bounce off the ceiling you don't need a background, you just need distance between the subject & the background to make it black.

shunned, your flies deserve you do it right, so let's see it. Of course I'd do it for you, should you post me a half dozen or so.

Soft boxes and strobes are a hassle, a speedlight bounced off the ceiling is about the easiest thing in the world and you can get some very good results.

SOBF, may as well aim high mate.
