Thumbing Through Some SBSs

kind of self-explanatory, right? We seem to have some impressive thread-wrappers that lurk around this board. let's try to keep your "first booger" posts at a minimum.

Easier to create a tapered body using the Carnage method; skipped the dubbed thorax.

A bit more involved than stuff like CDC & Elk or X-Caddis but it'll float until it's chewed up or broken off. If I get to Yellowstone and go in the West side, I'll give it a try.

hook – Dai Riki 135 #14
thread - Danville 6/0 pale yellow
abdomen/wing case/head - 1mm foam cream
hackle - partridge
wing - Congo Hair off white
legs - deer hair bleached

Neat variation of a Hatchmaster, with the parachute hackle under the body. Woodduck definitely worked better for me than mallard. Here's the SBS

hook – Dai Riki 125 #12
thread/rib - UTC 70 grey brown
tail/abdomen/head - woodduck flank
wing - Congo Hair white
hackle - rusty dun

Tried brushing the feather with Sally with poor results. Searched the house for vinyl cement; remembered doing some plumbing repairs last week and the proverbial lightbulb went off

Stuff worked great, ventilation is key; luckily, I stepped out of the gene pool years ago.

Betters' Other Fly

Image

Found this on the Eflytyer site. Not one that gets much attention; pretty vanilla pattern compared to some of his other stuff, like the Ausable Wulff or Bomber, but in these colors it would make a decent hecuba (fall drake). Pattern calls for barred dun variant, of which I have none; 2 feather combo will suffice.

hook – Dai Riki 320 #12
thread/rib - UTC 70 grey/brown
tail - woodchuck guard hairs
body - Australian possum
wing - Congo Hair cream
hackle - dun/grizzly

mash barb, start thread , wrap to bend

Image

clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) a healthy clump of chuck hair; tie in/trim butts

Image

Image

tie in a hank of CH; x-wrap and post up

Image

Image

tie in hackles, shiny side out

Image

dub thread, dub body; finish at base of wing

Image

Image

wrap hackles down post; capture tips with thread, trim

Image

Image

half hitch x 2 at base of wing, SHHAN, trim wing

Tip; there is no "Australian Opossum". We only have possums; we love them so much we gave a shitload to the kiwis as well

Fixed that; now that I think about it, either you or Tard pointed that out to me before.

White's Active Dun

Image

U.K. tyer Phillip White's variation to Harrop's Hairwing Dun; with an olive tail/abdomen it'd make a passable green drake.

hook – Dai Riki 300 #10
thread - Danville 6/0 yellow/olive
rib - tying thread
tail/abdomen - pheasant tail bleached
thorax - dubbing PMD
hackle - grizzly dyed olive
wing - woodduck flank

mash barb, start thread (leave tag end long for rib), wrap to bend

Image

measure (hook length) some pt fibers; tie in

Image

Image

wrap pt to 1/2 mark; tie off/trim

Image

dub thread/dub thorax (leave about 1 eye width free in front for wing)

Image

Image

tie in hackle, wrap to rear of thorax

Image

Image

rib thru abdomen and thorax; tie off/trim, trim hackle tip

Image

Image

prep woodduck flank (left the center section in this time; will trim out on next to see if there's much difference in tying/appearance)

Image

fold feather, measure (tips to bend), tie in; pull butts up, set angle with thread wraps

Image

Image

Image

whip finish, SHHAN, trim butts, trim out hackle underneath

tie in a few strands of CH, wrap to tail (take 1 wrap behind) and back; tie off/trim

Image

Image

split wing; x-wrap and post (leaning forward)

Image

Simple Foam Stone

Image

Found a pic on the interweb; notional tying sequence, change colors to suit your needs. Make it a little fatter and omit the tail and you have a passable hopper.

hook – Dai Riki 280 #10
thread/rib - UTC 70 grey brown
butt/abdomen/head - 1mm foam cream
tail - goose biots cream
wing - deer hair
thorax - dubbing cream
hackle - grizzly
legs - medium rubber cream
indicator - 1mm foam orange

mash barb, start thread at 2/3 mark; wrap to bend

Image

tie in foam strip (1/3 gap width), wrap to bend; fold over to create butt, tie down

Image

Image

tie in biot on either side of butt

Image

Image

brush shank with Super Glue, wrap foam forward; tie off/trim

Image

tie in wider (gap width) foam strip; wrap to eye

Image

clean, stack, measure (tips to tail) a clump of deer hair; trim, tie in

Image

Image

Image

tie in legs at base of wing; wrap halfway down thorax

Image

dub thread, dub head

Image

Image

tie in hackle, wrap to head and back; tie off/ trim

Image

Image

pull foam back, tie down

Image

Image

add indicator, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Image

trim foam, legs and underside of hackle
