Thumbing Through Some SBSs

kind of self-explanatory, right? We seem to have some impressive thread-wrappers that lurk around this board. let's try to keep your "first booger" posts at a minimum.

A Euro seatrout pattern; here's a decent SBS I found.

Spencer's Moose Hair Muddler

Image

Found this in the Bend Bulletin. Simplicity in itself, although you want to keep the wing/head sparse; if you've never spun moose hair you're in for a treat. Change color/size to suit your needs.

hook - Maruto 2312 #6
thread - UTC 140 black
body - Congo Hair purple
wing/head - moose body hair

mash barb/start thread; fold over a hank of CH, tie in, wrap to bend

Image

Image

twist the CH, wrap to tie in; tie off, untwist, trim

Image

Image

clean, stack, measure (hook length) a clump of moose body hair; trim, spin the bobbin to tighten up the thread, take 2 soft loops, spin the moose hair (it may need a little assistance)

Image

Image

Image

stroke the head back, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

body - Congo Hair gold
wing/head - bleached moose body hair

Charlie Special

A vintage cutthroat pattern from Flies of the Northwest. Going to tie some of these in orange, too, because little blue line cutts are stupid for orange.

hook - Dai Riki 300 #10
thread - Danville 6/0 black
tail - golden pheasant tippet
rib - x-small wire gold
body - floss scarlet
hackle - brown
underwing - deer hair
overwing - calftail white

mash barb, start thread; tie in rib, wrap to bend

Image

strip some tippet fibers, measure (gap width past bend); tie in/trim

Image

Image

tie in floss; create tapered body, tie off/trim (leave yourself about 2 eye widths at the front for the wing tie-in)

Image

Image

tie in hackle (use your good stuff if you want but with the questionable floating properties of the tail and body, you're just delaying the inevitable); palmer to the tail

Image

Image

rib thru hackle; helicopter end, cover with thread, trim hackle tip

Image

clean, stack, measure (tips not quite to tail) a clump of deer hair; trim to length/tie in

Image

Image

repeat with calftail

Image

whip finish, SHHAN

Ugly Rudamus

Image

Originated by Montana tyer John Faust; not sure if this came before/after Doug Swisher's Madame X, but they do seem to share some genetic code.

tail - elk hair
body - Flashabou pearl
underwing - Flashabou pearl
over-underwing - turkey quill
head/wing - elk hair

Image

Image

tie in some Flashabou, wrap to tail, leave tips hanging forward over head

Image

wrap body; tie off/trim

Image

fold tips back, tie down, trim a bit longer than tail

Image

push elk hair back around eye, distributing evenly all around

Tom Thumb

Image

A vintage stillwater pattern; either English or B.C. roots. The wing/shellback sequence was lifted from Charlie Craven's Improved Humpy; makes it much easier to get consistent wing length and cuts down on bulk.

hook - Dai Riki 300 #10
thread - UTC 140 tan
tail - elk hair
body - peacock herl
shellback/wing - elk hair

mash barb, start thread; wrap to bend

Image

clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) a clump of elk hair; tie in/trim

Image

Image

clean, stack, measure (shank length) another clump of elk

Image

tie in at eye, trim about 1/2 of the hair out as you wrap to towards the tail to cut down on bulk

Image

Image

Image

tie in peacock, wrap herl to front, tie off/trim; re-enforce if you want (I should have counterwrapped some x-small wire - next one) but with the ungulate shellback, it's just a race to see which will shred first

Image

Image

pull shellback forward; tie off/trim butts

Image

Image

Image

pull wing back (note to self - use black thread next time)

Image

half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Image
