Thumbing Through Some SBSs

kind of self-explanatory, right? We seem to have some impressive thread-wrappers that lurk around this board. let's try to keep your "first booger" posts at a minimum.

Gapen's Thief

Image

Dan Gapen's simplified version of his dad's Muddler. Original had a dubbed wool head; I've also seen it with a hackle throat, which I may add on future flies.

hook - Mustad 79580 #6
thread - Danville 6/0 black
tail - duck quill red
rib - small wire silver
body - tinsel silver
underwing - squirrel tail
wing - turkey
head - ostrich herl

mash barb, start thread (about 2 eye widths from eye); tie in wire, wrap to bend

Image

measure (gap width past bend) matching duck quill segments; tie in/trim, return to original tie-in

Image

Image

tie in tinsel, wrap to tail and back; tie off/trim

Image

Image

counterwrap wire, helicopter end, cover with thread

Image

Image

measure (tips to tail) a sparse clump of squirrel tail; trim to length, dose butts with Sally, tie in

Image

Image

prep turkey quill segments

Image

measure (tips to tail), fold/pinch, wax heavily, tie in, crushing the fibers on top, trim butts

Image

Image

Image

tie in some ostrich herl, twist around thread

Image

Image

wrap herl, tie off/trim, whip finish, SHHAN (be careful, the herl really wicks it up)

Gapen's Thief 2

Stretch version with throat, in alternate color pallette (overshot the runway on the first try; wing's a bit more in proportion now).

hook - Mustad 3665A #6
thread - Danville 6/0 black
tail - duck quill orange
rib - small wire gold
body - tinsel gold
underwing - fox squirrel tail
wing - turkey tail
throat - hen orange
head - ostrich herl

Sawada's Heckham Silver

Image

Image

Image

Don't tie many McGinty's so I have little experience with this part of a mallard; kind of unruly stuff, but pretty.

hook - Mustad 3906 #8
thread - Danville 6/0 black
tail - golden pheasant tippets
rib - oval tinsel silver
body - tinsel silver
hackle - hen black
wing - white tipped mallard (from the blue chevron on the wings)

Goulet's Moby Dick

Image

Image

From Massachusett's tyer Dave Goulet; not sure if it's a nod to Melville or Bonham. Can be tied as a wet, dry or streamer; I skinnied it down a bit here so it's more of a beluga than a sperm whale.

hook - Mustad 9671 #8
thread - Danville 6/0 black
tail - golden pheasant tippet
rib - small wire gold
body - peacock herl
hackle - brown
wing - mallard flank

Sawada's Hendrickson

Image

Not sure if this is an after effect of Fukishima on the local hatches or something out of a Herter's catalogue.

hook - Mustad 3906 #8
thread - Danville 6/0 black
tail - woodduck flank
rib - oval tinsel gold
body - red fox
hackle - hen dun/brown
wing - barred woodduck flank (mine's a bit meatier than Mr. Sawada but that's where the sweet spot was on the feathers I had available).

mash barb, start thread, tie in rib, wrap to bend

Image

measure (hook length) some woodduck flank fibers; tie in/trim

Image

Image

dub thread/dub body

Image

Image

rib body; tie off/trim

Image

tie in (folded) hackles by tip; wrap, tie off/trim

Image

Image

stroke fibers down (tying between coats of paint on the kitchen cabinets - Benjamin Moore Advance Satin, Palace White; nice paint); cover with thread wraps

Image

Image

prep 2 slips of woodduck, measure (tips just past bend), fold/pinch, wax thread, tie in; tipped the hook up a bit to use gravity to my advantage

Image

Image

Image

Image

trim butts, whip finish, SHHAN (2 coats, at least)

Bredbo

Image

An Aussie fly from the late 1800's, supposedly a hopper imitation. I've seen it tied with the GP tippets parallel to the hook shank and as a pair of tips under the wing; did it as a bunch here, similar to Sawada's version. The wing came from feathers found at the butt of a pheasant tail clump; not sure what they're called but they have nice markings.

hook - Mustad 3906 #8
thread - Danville 6/0 black
rib - oval tinsel gold
body - floss orange
underwing - golden pheasant tippets
throat - partridge
wing - pheasant tail tertiary(?) feather

mash barb, start thread 1 eye width back from eye, tie in rib, wrap to bend, return to tie-in

Image

tie in floss, wrap to bend and back; tie off/trim

Image

Image

rib body; tie off/trim

Image

measure (gap width past bend) a segment of gp tippets; fold, tie in/trim

Image

Image

tie in partridge by tip; wrap, tie off/trim (keep it sparse)

Image

Image

stroke fibers down, cover with thread

Image

Image

here's what the feather for the wing looks like

Image

prepare 2 segments, measure (tips to end of underwing), fold, tie in

Image

Image

Image

trim, whip finish, SHHAN

Image

Image

tie in floss, wrap to bend and back; tie off/trim

Image

Image

tie in hackle; palmer to bend

Image

Image

if you lay a needle over the shank before you tie the wings in and remove just before you draw the two wraps tight you can avoid the concave wing thingy you've got going on that prevents me from being seen with you.
