Thumbing Through Some SBSs

kind of self-explanatory, right? We seem to have some impressive thread-wrappers that lurk around this board. let's try to keep your "first booger" posts at a minimum.

Kamloops Caddis Pupa

Image

Pretty basic stuff here; change color/size to suit your needs.

hook -Dai Riki 280 #8
thread - Danville 6/0 black
abdomen - dubbing olive
legs/wingcase - pheasant rump dyed olive
thorax/head - peacock herl

mash barb, start thread at 50% mark, wrap to bend

Image

dub thread/dub abdomen

Image

Image

invert hook, move thread to 1 eye width back from eye, strip some fibers from a pheasant rump feather, measure (tips from tie in to point), tie in facing forward

Image

Image

doesn't look quite right so added a bit more dubbing to extend abdomen

Image

tie in another pheasant rump feather (a bit more durable that pheasant tail fibers) by tips

Image

tie in some peacock herl; twist around thread, wrap to legs

Image

Image

Image

pull legs back, tie down

Image

Image

pull shellback forward; tie down/trim

Image

Image

tie in a couple more peacock herls; twist around thread

Image

Image

wrap herl, tie off/trim, whip finish, SHHAN

Nation's Silvertip

Image

A vintage pattern from Kamloops tyer/guide Bill Nation.

hook - Mustad 9671 #8
thread - Danville 6/0 black
tail - golden pheasant tippets
rib - oval tinsel silver
body - back half silver tinsel, front half Uni Stretch black
throat - guinea hen
underwing - golden pheasant tippets
wing - turkey tail

mash barb, start thread 1 eye width back from eye; tie in rib, wrap to bend

Image

prep pheasant tippet, measure (gap width past bend); tie in/trim

Image

Image

Image

tie in tinsel at 50% (of wrapped shank) mark, wrap to tail and back; tie off/trim

Image

Image

tie in Uni Stretch at front index point, wrap to tinsel and back; tie off/trim

Image

Image

counterwrap rib; tie off/trim

Image

Image

tie in (folded) guinea feather by tip, wrap, tie off/trim

Image

Image

stroke fibers down/back, cover with thread wraps

Image

Image

measure (tips to bend) and tie in a few GP tippets on each side

Image

Image

prep 2 slips of turkey tail (gap width), measure (tips just past tail), fold, tie down (it really helps if you wax the thread; secures it on top and keeps it from torqueing around)/trim

Image

Image

Image

Image

whip finish, SHHAN (yes, that little thread fiber at the tail/tinsel bothers me)

Idaho Nymph

Image

Not a whole lot of info on this one, although it appears to have been around for a while; apparently popular on B.C. stillwaters at one time. Only thing I added to the recipe I found was the wire counter rib, to protect the ostrich herl. Weight optional.

hook - Mustad 9671 #8
thread - Danville 6/0 black
counter rib - x-small wire silver
tail - hen black
abdomen - acrylic yarn black
rib - ostrich herl black
shellback - goose white
hackle - hen black
head - peacock herl

mash barb, start thread; tie in rib, wrap to bend

Image

measure (gap width past bend) a few hackle fibers; tie in/trim

Image

tie in a strand (pulled one out of a piece of 4-ply) of yarn at 2/3 mark; wrap tapered body, finishing 1 eye width back from eye

Image

Image

tie in ostrich herl at 2/3 mark; wrap to bend

Image

Image

capture tip with wire, continue ribbing to 2/3 mark, helicopter end, cover with thread

Image

Image

tie in a section of goose quill (gap width)

Image

tie in (folded) hackle by tip; wrap forward, tie off/trim

Image

Image

pull shellback forward; tie down/trim

Image

Image

tie in a couple peacock herls; twist around thread

Image

Image

wrap, tie off/trim, whip finish, SHHAN

Image

Image

tie in some peacock herl

Image

Pushprop Midge Emerger

Image

Updated version of the Marabou Midge Emerger. The craft foam wing should provide a bit more support than the packing foam.

thread - Danville 6/0 black
rib - Krystal Flash pearl
abdomen - turkey biot dark grey
hackle - grizzly
wing - 1mm foam white

Image

tie in moistened biot; wrap to 2/3 mark, tie off/trim

Image

Image

rib abdomen; tie off/trim

Image

tie in hackle; take a couple turns, tie off/trim

Image

Image

tie in foam (if you twist it a turn, makes it easier to tie in)

Image

tie in peacock

Image

twist peacock around thread, Figure 8 wrap around wing, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Image

Image

trim wing
