Kelly's Searcher (variation)

Image

Another B.C. stillwater fly of unknown origin. Swapped out the guinea tail/beard for Mearns quail and the gathered pheasant tail wing (not a huge fan) for pheasant rump, which is a bit more durable.

thread - Danville 6/0 black
tail - Mearns quail
rib - large tinsel gold
body - Ice Dub Harder's Bloody Black
beard - Mearn's quail
wing - pheasant rump

mash barb, start thread

Image

strip off some quail fibers, measure (gap width past bend); tie in/trim

Image

Image

tie in rib

Image

dub thread/dub tapered body

Image

Image

rib body; tie off/trim

Image

tie in quail by tip; wrap, tie off/trim

Image

Image

stroke fibers down/back, cover with thread wraps

Image

Image

measure (halfway point on the tail) a pheasant rump feather

Image

tie in/trim, whip finish, SHHAN (2 coats)

Image

prep woodduck; tie in by tip, wrap, tie off/trim

Image

Image

Image

tie in flash

Image

fold back, cover with thread, whip finish, SHHAN, trim flash (this one turned out a bit unruly but the fibers should sweep back when wet)

Ogden's Lazy Rider

Image

Another B.C. pattern; simple enough to tie, making up for a lack of durability.

hook - Dai Riki 300 #10
thread - Danville 6/0 black
tai/body - deer hair
hackle - grizzly

mash barb, start thread at 2/3 mark, wrap to bend

Image

clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) a clump of deer hair; tie in with 2 soft loops (pardon the thumb, painting kitchen cabinets), gradually tighten, allowing deer hair to encircle shank, lock down with tighter wraps

Image

Image

Image

pull butts back, move thread to 2/3 mark, then pull butts forward, surrounding shank; tie down/trim

Image

Image

Image

Image

tie in hackle

Image

wrap hackle, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Image

Image

Image

Jingler variation

Image

Image

Image

Longer hook, longer tail and a few wraps of partridge.

Image

Image

Image

pull wingcase forward, tie down

Stick Fly

Image

Image

Found this on a U.K. site. The kind of fly you fish in the rocks without a second thought; takes about 5 minutes to tie, less if you don't care about being neat.

thread - Danville 6/0 brown
rib - small wire gold
tail/abdomen - peacock herl

Lutz's No Brainer

Image

Similar to the Dyret, with an all-ungulate body. Added wire rib; otherwise it'd be a One-Timer.

hook - TMC 5212 #10
thread - UTC 140 brown
rib - x-small wire gold
tail/body/head - elk hair
hackle - brown (undersize by 1)

mash barb, start thread; tie in rib, wrap to bend

Image

clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) a clump of elk hair; tie in with 2 loose wraps, apply gradual tension, allowing the hair to encircle the shank, then pull tight

Image

Image

move the thread forward, 1 eye width back from the eye, pull hair forward; tie down

Image

Image

tie in hackle, wrap to bend

Image

Image

capture tip with wire, rib thru body to eye; helicopter end, pull hair back and cover with thread wraps, trim hackle tip

Image

Image

whip finish, SHHAN

Image

trim head
