Thumbing Through Some SBSs

kind of self-explanatory, right? We seem to have some impressive thread-wrappers that lurk around this board. let's try to keep your "first booger" posts at a minimum.

Patient Angler Stone (Carnage variation)

Image

Easy enough to transition the pattern to foam; integrating the head into the initial steps saves a bit of time and thread wraps. Tied Rubenesque here; body thickness/shape determined by foam width/tension while wrapping.

hook – Dai Riki 135 #8
thread - UTC 140 fluoro orange
core - 20 lb mono
tail - moose body hair
abdomen/head - 1mm foam orange
thorax - peacock herl
hackle - rusty dun
wing - elk hair

put a loop in the mono; mash barb, start thread, tie in mono

Image

Image

clean, stack, measure (2x hook length) a clump of moose body hair; tie in/trim butts, hook the loop onto the gallows

Image

Image

wrap moose around the core

Image

Image

tie in foam strip over the eye; fold and tie down, forming head

Image

Image

Image

brush underbody with Super Glue

Image

take a turn on the hook, then wrap up the core; brush on a bit more glue and wrap back down, tie off/trim

Image

Image

re-set hook angle, trim mono

Image

tie in peacock; wrap thorax, tie off/ trim

Image

Image

tie in hackle; wrap thru thorax, tie off/ trim

Image

Image

clean, stack, measure (tips to tail) a clump of elk hair; tie in, taking wraps thru the butts, pushing them against the head

Image

Image

whip finish, SHHAN, trim butts, trim out hackle underneath (looks like the point could use a little filing)

Craven's Screaming Banshee (Carnage variation)

Image

First cut here. Ungulate shellback somewhat superfluous; to be replaced with MORE FOAM.

hook - Dai Riki 135 #12
thread - UTC 140 tan
tag - medium tinsel opal
core - 20lb mono
body - 1mm foam tan
wing(s)/shellback - yearling elk

mash barb, start thread, tie in tinsel, wrap down bend and back; tie off/ trim

Image

Image

put a loop in mono, tie in; create thread bump at eye

Image

Image

clean, stack, measure (shank length) a clump of elk hair; tie in with tips facing forward

Image

Image

trim 3/4 of the butts; hook loop onto the gallows

Image

Image

wrap elk up the core and back

Image

tie in foam

Image

brush on some Super Glue, wrap foam up and back; tie off/trim

Image

Image

Image

clean, stack, measure (same as front wing) another clump of elk

Image

trim to length, tie in, letting butts flare

Image

Image

split wing, pull butts forward, tie off/trim

Image

Image

Image

Image

create thread dam to set front wing angle

Image

whip finish, SHHAN, trim mono

Image

this thread needs more rain, smoking, violence and double-crossing counter terrorism to make any sense.

Kolzer's Firefly (variation)

Image

Local cutts have shown interest; tied here with foam body/Bomber style wing.

hook - TMC 5212 #10
thread - UTC 140 hot orange
tail - deer hair dyed dark brown
rib - x-small wire copper
body - 1mm foam orange
body hackle - brown (undersize by 2)
wing - deer hair dyed dark brown
hackle - brown

mash barb, start thread at 3/4 mark

Image

clean, stack, measure (2x gap width) a clump of deer hair; tie in/trim butts, move thread to point above barb

Image

Image

Image

clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) another clump of deer hair; tie in, trim butts at wing bump junction

Image

Image

tie in rib

Image

tie in foam, wrap to wing; tie off/trim

Image

Image

tie in hackle; wrap to tail

Image

Image

capture tip of hackle with wire; rib body, helicopter end, cover with thread

Image

Image

pull wing back, set angle with thread dam

Image

Image

tie in hackle

Image

wrap hackle, tie off/trim, whip finish, SHHAN

Wike's Big R Bug (Carnage variation)

Image

A few changes to the original; not into those pre-formed bodies so went with the foam. Original also used schlappen for the hackle; didn't have any so subbed a big, webby, cape hackle. Tied here as a short-wing stone.

hook – Dai Riki 280 #8
thread - UTC 140 tan
core - 20 lb mono
under tail - elk hair
abdomen - 2mm foam tan
wing - deer hair
legs/antennae - medium rubber golden stone
thorax - Ice Dub golden brown
hackle - barred cream

put a loop on one end of the mono

Image

mash barb, start thread at mid shank; brush on a little Super Glue and tie on mono

Image

Clean, stack some elk hair (don't need to measure since it's going to get trimmed away); trim butts/tie in (with the thicker foam, torque can be an issue when wrapping it on bare mono; the ungulate hair helps stabilize the process)

Image

hook the loop onto the gallows; wrap the elk up and back to the base

Image

tie in foam strip (1/2 gap width)

Image

brush on Super Glue, one wrap at the base, then up the mono

Image

a little more Super Glue, then wrap back down, tie off/trim, trim elk tips; body taper's a function of spacing and tension

Image

Image

clean, stack, measure (tips not quite to tail) a healthy clump of deer hair ( mule used here); trim to length, tie in

Image

Image

tie in legs

Image

tie in antennae

Image

tie in (folded) hackle by tip

Image

dub thread/dub thorax

Image

Image

wrap hackle, stroking fibers back; tie off/trim, whip finish, SHHAN, trim legs/antennae

Image
