Thumbing Through Some SBSs

kind of self-explanatory, right? We seem to have some impressive thread-wrappers that lurk around this board. let's try to keep your "first booger" posts at a minimum.

Dancing Splitsville Spruce Moth

Image

Not sure if there's a clamoring for an upside down, foam-bodied, hacklestacker spruce moth, but if there ever is, I'm in on the ground floor. May consider the decaf tomorrow.

hook – Dai Riki 280 #12
thread - UTC 140 tan
abdomen - 1mm foam tan
hackle - barred cream
wing - deer hair bleached

mash barb, invert hook, start thread

Image

tie in foam, brush on Super Glue, wrap body to bend and return; tie off/trim

Image

Image

Image

Image

tie in thread loop (UTC 140 cream used here); hook onto the gallows

Image

tie in hackle at base, wrap hackle up the loop (thorax width) and back down; tie off at base, trim

Image

Image

stroke hackle fibers back

Image[

clean, stack, measure (tips to bend) a clump of deer hair, trim butts; 2 soft loops, pull tight

Image

Image

Image

pull the hackle/loop thru the wing; tie down

Image

pull tight, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Ruoff's Signal Emerger

Image

Found this on Hans Weilenmann's site. Tied the wing a bit fuller than the original to improve visibility (for me).

hook – Dai Riki 320 #14
thread - Danville 6/0 brown
abdomen - Zelon dubbing hydropsyche
thorax - dubbing hot orange
hackle - dun CdC/partridge
wing - Congo Hair white

mash barb, start thread at 2/3 mark; wrap to bend

Image

dub thread/dub abdomen to 2/3 mark

Image

Image

dub thorax to 80% mark

Image

Image

tie in a hank of CH (as thick or thin as you desire; my sight's not as good as Mr. Ruoff's) over the eye

Image

create thread loop

Image

insert CdC in clip (my stock is low-grade so I used 2 feathers), trim butts, insert in loop, spin

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

tie in partridge by tip

Image

wrap CDC; tie off/trim

Image

wrap partridge; tie off/trim

Image

stand wing up, set angle with thread wraps, whip finish, SHHAN ( looks like another coat is needed)

Image

trim wing

Cindberg

Image

A Catskill pattern from the 30's, devised by Dr. Bernard Cindberg.

hook – Dai Riki 320 #12
thread - MFC 8/0 sand
tail - ginger hackle fibers/wood duck flank
abdomen - dubbing light Cahill
hackle - ginger/wood duck flank

mash barb, start thread at 2/3 mark; wrap to point above barb and make a small thread bump

Image

strip some hackle fibers, stack, measure (shank length); tie in/trim

Image

Image

tie some wood duck flank on top; finish thread about 1 eye width back from eye

Image

Image

trim out center from a woodduck flank feather; measure (hook length), tie in with a couple soft loops, allowing fibers to encircle shank, tips facing forward, trim butts

Image

Image

Image

dub thread, dub body to 2/3 mark

Image

Image

tie in hackle; wrap, tie off/trim

Image

Image

push the woodduck back, grasp with fingers and create thread dam, pushing it into the hackle

Gary's Gremlin (variation)

Image

Image

Image

Found this on Frankenfly; an old-school Michigan fly from Gary McClain. Original was tied with Lion Wool-Ease Chunky Walnut yarn; the same material his uncle, Jerry McClain, used to tie the famous McClain Drake. Take a sheep and drop it in the middle of a lake; it's gonna drown. Take a wad of polypropylene yarn and throw it in same lake; it's gonna float. Case closed. Legs optional, but sexy.

hook - TMC 5212 #10
thread - Uni 6/0 camel
tail - calftail tan
abdomen - EP Fibers baitfish blend
wing - calftail tan
legs - medium rubber brown
hackle - grizzly/brown

Ostermann's RDH Sedge

Image

Similar to the RDH Stone with a Henry's Fork Hopper body and optional legs. Tied as an October Caddis; if the fires haven't shut down all the rivers up here over the next few weeks, may give it a try, in addition to foam stuff.

hook – Dai Riki 280 #10
thread/rib - UTC 140 burnt orange
abdomen/wing/hackle - deer hair dyed orange
legs - medium rubber orange

mash barb, start thread at 2/3 mark; wrap to bend and back

Image

clean, stack, trim tips on a clump of deer hair; tie in by tip with a couple loose wraps, allowing the hair to encircle the shank

Image

wrap to point above barb

Image

pull butts forward, encircling shank, spiral rib back to tie in; tie off/trim butts

Image

Image

Image

clean, stack, measure (tips gap width past bend) a clump of deer hair; tie in/trim butts

Image

Image

tie in legs

Image

create thread loop, wax

Image

clean, stack a clump of deer hair, insert in clip, trim butts; insert clip in loop, adjust tips (should be about 1 1/2 x gap width), spin

Image

Image

Image

Image

stroke fibers back, wrap hackle, tie off, whip finish, SHHAN

Image

Image

trim legs, trim out hackle underneath

Ostermann's RUH Drake (variation)

Image

RUH - Real Ungulate Hair; had to change the name since I used elk for the wing and body. Took the basic Carnage framework and draped it with said ungulate hair. Notional tying sequence; body's a bit chunky, a few less tail fibers next time. Tied here as a Fall Drake; change color/size to suit your needs.

hook – Dai Riki 135 #12
thread/rib - UTC 140 tan
core - 7lb mono
tail - deer hair
rib - Uni 6/0 camel
abdomen/wing - yearling elk hair bleached
hackle - deer hair

make a loop in a piece of mono

Image

mash barb, start thread at mid shank; brush on some Superglue and tie in mono

Image

clean, stack, measure (2x shank) a clump of deer hair; tie in/trim butts

Image

Image

hook the loop onto the gallows; tie in rib, wrap up the body and back to tie-in

Image

Image

clean, stack, measure (shank length +) a clump of elk; 2 soft loops, then pull firmly while holding onto elk, flaring tips while keeping it from spinning

Image

Image

Image

trim away about 1/2 of the butts, wrap remaining up the tail

Image

pull buts back down, surrounding underbody; tie off at base of wing and trim

Image

Image

rib body; tie off/trim

Image

pull wing back; set angle with thread dam

Image

Image

create thread loop; wax

Image

clean, stack a clump of deer hair, insert in clip, trim butts; insert clip in loop, adjust tips (should be about 1 1/2 x gap width), spin

Image

Image

Image

Image

stroke fibers back, take a couple wraps behind the wing

Image

and in front; tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Image

trim out hackle underneath

Image

плут оса

Image

Found this on a Russian site. Haven't tied a Rogue style body in a while; if you're not up for the Carnage method, it makes an acceptable product.

hook – Dai Riki 135 #8
thread/rib - UTC 140 black
abdomen - 1mm foam yellow
wing case/head - 1mm foam black
thorax - dubbing yellow
wing - Congo Hair white
legs - deer hair dyed dark dun

fold a piece of foam in half; cut at an angle, with the folded end at the narrowest point

Image

Image

insert needle into the folded end; mount needle in the vise, start thread

Image

Image

Image

fold foam forward, take 2 soft loops, pull firmly and take a few more wraps

Image

Image

pull foam back, split the uprights with the thread and take a few wraps forward

Image

pull foam forward an repeat the process

Image

Image

Image

Image

that should do it; brush the wraps with Sally and slide the body off the needle

Image

mash barb, start thread

Image

hold the body against the hook to determine placement, brush shank with Super Glue and tie in; trim

Image

Image

tie in wingcase

Image

dub thread/dub shaggy thorax

Image

Image

tie in CH

Image

create thread loop; wax

Image

clean, stack, measure (approx 2x gap) a clump of deer hair; insert in clip, trim butts, insert in loop, spin

Image

Image

Image

Image

stroke fibers back, wrap, tie off/trim

Image

pull wingcase forward, tie down, fold to create head, tie off, trim, whip finish, SHHAN

Image

Image

Image

Image

trim wing, hop on the nearest MI-8 and head for the tundra
