Thumbing Through Some SBSs

kind of self-explanatory, right? We seem to have some impressive thread-wrappers that lurk around this board. let's try to keep your "first booger" posts at a minimum.

Steen’s Bullethead Stimi 2

This time with legs; shortened up the tail, too. Tyed here in skwala colors; not the olive green stuff that I've been using in the past but something closer to the ones I've been seeing, which is something like dirty motor oil (at least on the rivers I've found them on).

Image

hook - Dai Riki 300 #10
thread - UTC 140 brown olive
tail - deer hair dyed dun
rib - x-small wire gold
body - dubbing brown
body hackle - barred rusty dun (undersize by 2)
wing/head - deer hair dyed dun
legs - Hedron Perfect Rubber brown
indicator - 1mm foam orange
I'd be ready when my feet touch ground
Wherever I come down

Simple Foam Caddis

Image

Was going to call it the PetroChemicalByproduct Caddis but PCB is probably not a good name choice. Size up one and this would work as a passable Spruce Moth.

hook - Dai Riki 305 #14
thread - Danville 6/0 tan
body/head - 1mm foam tan
wing - Congo Hair tan
thorax - dubbing tan (optional - helps the hackle lay better)
hackle - barred cream

mash barb, start thread; cover shank and return to eye

Image

tie in foam strip (1/2 gap width) forward over eye

Image

brush shank with Super Glue, fold back/create head; tie down, wrap to bend

Image

Image

wrap body, tie off/trim

Image

tie in a hank of CH; crosswrap

Image

Image

tie in hackle, sweeping wing back

Image

dub thread/dub thorax

Image

Image

wrap hackle; tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Image

trim hackle underneath/trim wing

For when the PMDs start coming off. No need making things more complicated than they have to be; here's a video if you need help.

thread - MFC 8/0 cream

body - dubbing yellow
wing - Congo Hair baitfish tan
hackle - ginger

Delektable Twisted Sister (variation)

Image

Notional tying sequence, came out something like the original with a few changes; swapped out the calftail overwing for synthetic because that stuff is a bitch to fold properly and I hate having to judge the length to get it to match the wing properly. Tied in these colors for stupid cutts; change to suit your needs.

hook - Dai Riki 300 #8
thread - UTC 140 Fluoro Orange
tail - deer hair bleached
rib - x-small wire copper
body - 1mm foam orange
body hackle - grizzly dyed orange (1 Tbs Rit Sunshine Orange/1 cup water; undersize by 2)
wing - deer hair bleached
legs - medium rubber brown
head - 1mm foam orange
overwing - Congo Hair white

mash barb, start thread at 2/3 mark; wrap to bend

Image

clean, stack, measure (gap width) a clump of deer hair; tie in/trim/cover with thread wraps

Image

Image

tie in rib

Image

tie in foam strip

Image

move thread forward to eye; tie in CG facing forward over eye

Image

wrap foam forward to 2/3 mark; tie off/trim

Image

tie in hackle at 2/3 mark; palmer rearward to tail

Image

Image

capture tip of hackle with wire; continue rib thru hackle, helicopter end/cover with thread, trim hackle tip

Image

clean, stack, measure (tips to tail) another clump of deer hair; trim to length/tie in

Image

Image

tie foam back in at eye, wrap back to 2/3 mark; tie off/trim

Image

Image

pull CH rearward over top of head; tie down

Image

Image

tie in legs

Image

whip finish, SHHAN, trim overwing, trim legs

Delektable Munchkin (variation)

Image

Again, notional tying sequence, but looking at pics on the interweb it's not too hard to figure out; change colors to suit your needs.

hook - Dai Riki 300 #14
thread - MFC 6/0 purple
shuck - Congo Hair brown
rib - x-small wire silver

wing - Congo Hair white
overwing - 1mm foam white

mash barb, start thread at 1/2 mark

Image

tie in CH and rib; wrap to bend and back

Image

tie in tinsel, wrap to shuck and back; tie off/trim

Image

Image

counterwrap rib, helicopter end, cover with thread; trim shuck (shank length)

Image

tie in foam strip over eye

Image

dub thread/dub thorax

pull wing to the rear, over the head and tie down

tie in legs (feel free to dub these wraps, as seen on tv; seems like a waste of time to me)

Cheech's Ice Wing Caddis

Image

Image

Image

Kind of a Streaking Caddis gone to seed; in these colors it should work for the hydropsyche emergence. Here's the vid if you're interested

hook - WFC Model 11 #16
thread - Danville 6/0 tan
underbody - opal tinsel medium
abdomen - micro tubing tan
underwing/thorax - Ice Dub golden brown
wing - deer hair (loop dubbed)
I'd be ready when my feet touch ground

Ice Wing Beetle

Image

Found an unattributed pic on the interweb; swapped out the Krystal Flash underwing for Ice Dub (since it looked nice on the caddis) and added some rubber legs because they go so well with foam (if you skip the legs, oversize the hackle). On anything #12 or smaller, I'd switch to 1mm foam.

hook - Dai Riki 135 #8
thread - UTC 140 rusty brown
rib - tying thread
body/shellback/head - 2mm foam tan
underwing - Ice Dub pheasant tail
wing - deer hair
legs - medium rubber brown (optional)
hackle - ginger

poke a hole in the foam

Image

mash barb, slide foam onto hook, start thread, wrap halfway down bend

Image

move foam back to thread, tie down

Image

Image

brush shank with Super Glue, move thread up; tie down foam creating 1st segment

Image

repeat

Image

when you reach the 3/4 mark, tie off/trim foam

Image

pull foam forward over hook; tie down, wrap to eye

Image

Image

tie in some Ice Dub, fold back/trim (even with bend)

Image

Image

clean, stack, measure (hook length) a clump of deer hair, trim butts/tie in; add some legs

Image

Image

tie in hackle; wrap, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Image

Image

trim head/legs

Image

Deepwoods Carnage Dun

Image

Image

Image

Spotting white wings in tree-lined pocketwater tunnels has become problematic so I switched to something a bit more visible. Using furniture markers on the orange foam has given me some ideas for the big bug hatch.

hook - WFC Model 11 #12
thread - Danville 6/0 orange
core - 8lb mono
tail - moose body hair bleached
body/head - 1mm foam orange colored with furniture marker pen (oak, I think)
wing - Parapost yarn (hot orange)
hackle - grizzly dyed march brown

Pena Zhuk II

Image

Drawing more terrestrial inspiration from Russia. Tied using materials within easy reach; change color/size to suit your needs.

hook - Dai Riki 135 #8
thread - UTC 140 cream/Danville 6/0 brown
body - Ice Dub golden brown
shellback - 2mm foam tan
legs/wing - deer hair
head - dubbing brown
skullcap - 1mm foam brown

mash barb/start thread at 3/4 mark; wrap to bend

Image

stretch end of foam (gap width), cut to taper; brush shank with Super Glue, tie in

Image

Image

dub thread/dub body to 3/4 mark

Image

Image

pull foam forward; tie down/trim, cover with thread

Image

Image

Image

clean, stack, measure (tips to bend) a clump of deer hair; trim butts, tie in, allowing deer hair to circle body (if it doesn't do the full 360, add some more where necessary)

Image

Image

thread swap (optional but cuts down on buildup)

Image

tie in foam strip (gap width) over eye

Image

dub head back to 3/4 mark

Image

Image

pull foam to rear; tie down

Image

whip finish, SHHAN, trim foam
