Musty Ruddler







A bit monochromatic but this was more an exercise in dyeing. Looking for the right mix for fiery brown - used the Rit formula for Autumn Maple and although it may be a bit off, it gave me a killer rust. The deer hair should look interesting with orange bodied muddlers.

Michigan Muddled Mayfly



For those fans of alliteration. Tried tying with grizzly hackle behind the collar but it didn't really do much for the fly so I ditched it.

tail - moose body hair
rib - tying thread
body - deer hair
collar - chukar
head - deer hair

mash barb, start thread at 2/3 mark; wrap to bend




clean, stack, measure (hook length) a clump of moose hair; tie in/trim, return thread to 2/3 mark






clean, stack, measure (tips just past bend) a clump of deer hair; trim butts at 2/3 mark on shank, tie in/spin








pull hair back, evenly distributing along the shank, rib to bend, then cross-rib back to 2/3 mark






tie in (folded) chukar feather by tip; wrap, tie off/trim






clean, stack, measure (tips to bend) a clump of deer hair; tie in with 2 soft loops, allowing hair to encircle hook, trim butts eve with hook eye, pull tight and spin










push hair back, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Doobry Muddled Crippler







A day (actually 3) late and dollar short for Halloween; again, using Rob Denson's wet as the framework.

collar - chukar dyed orange (1 Tbs Rit Sunshine Orange/1 cup water)

Hairwing Wickham Muddler







At least it started life as an attempt at a Wickham. Again, more an experiment in dyeing, this time looking for shades of ginger; also dyed some bleached pheasant tail, which turned out well, but decided to go with natural on the back end to relieve the monochrome effect I got with first Musty Ruddler. Rob Denson's wet used fox squirrel for the wing but I liked how the marmot tail looked so I subbed.

The deer hair was left in the dye bath for a while and took on a darker, golden shade which I'm not unhappy with.

Used Davie McPhail's Sunburst Mayfly as the foundation with a few minor changes.

collar - chukar dyed purple (Phlox - 1 1/2 Tsp Rit Violet, 1/12 Tsp Rit Purple/4 cups water for 2 minutes)
head - deer hair dyed Silver Doctor Blue (2 packs Koolaid Ice Blue Raspberry/1 cup water)

Will you do a SBS for one of these?

If so, Sandrone may be using craft fur brushes.
