kind of self-explanatory, right? We seem to have some impressive thread-wrappers that lurk around this board. let's try to keep your "first booger" posts at a minimum.

Here’s Charlie’s video if you’re interested. Btw, the dubbing, from Orvis (I was desperate) was a bag of guard hairs with a little flash; I’ve also got some rainbow sow/scud dubbing from them which is basically a bag of shredded Brillo.

Was watching Charlie Craven’s X Caddis video and liked the full head he put on it; just took it a little bit further and added rib/synth wing.

Swapped out the calf body hair overwing on the original with something a bit more compressible; cuts down on the bulk at the hackling point.

Charlie Craven’s SBS is the best I’ve seen, despite the fact he uses a POS Tiemco 200 hook. Tied here as a lime sally; I guess I could have done a better job defining the head but I got carried away packing as much hackle as I could onto the fly.

Not crazy about the shade of olive on the tail and collar but this was more to establish the tying sequence; I’ll try something else next go-round.

hook - WFC Model 3 #12
thread - Danville 6/0 olive
tail - pheasant rump dyed olive
rib - Uni Stretch yellow
body - hare’s ear dyed olive
underwing - CdC dark dun
overwing/head - deer hair dyed dun
collar - sharptail grouse dyed olive

Start thread at head

Image

Clean, stack, measure (hook length) a clump of deer hair; trim to length, tie in on top of hook shank (don’t let it spin)

Image

Image

Image

Wrap thread to bend; strip some fibers off a pheasant rump feather, measure (shank length), tie in

Image

Image

Tie in rib

Image

Dub thread/dub body up to deer hair butts

Image

Image

Counterwrap rib; tie off/trim

Image

Measure (tips just past bend) a pair of CdC feathers; tie in/trim

Image

Image

Fold deer hair back over body, keeping fibers on top of hook

Image

Tie down with a couple firm wraps to create head

Image

Tie in (insert favorite upland game bird feather) by tip

Image

Wrap collar sweeping fibers back; tie off/trim

Image

Add a very little bit of dubbing

Image

Wrap in front of collar, whip finish, SHHAN

Much happier with the color for the tail/collar (doubtful that the fish will care at all); the chartreuse on dusky grouse makes for a nice shade of olive. Ran out of dun CdC so subbed CH, which I actually like better.

thread - Danville 6/0 olive

Liked the fly but thought some legs would liven it up a bit; buggy as shit and simple to tie. Here’s the video if you’re interested.

The twisted poly yarn creates the same segmented body as on his Caddis Variant. Added a dubbed thorax for a little more flash

hook - Dai Riki 730 #8
thread - UTC 140 woodduck
tail - deer hair bleached
body - Congo Hair gold
wing - elk hair
thorax - Ice Dub golden brown
hackle - ginger/grizzly

Smash barb, start thread at 2/3 mark, wrap to bend

Image

Clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) a clump of deer hair; tie in/trim butts, trim out some of the tail fibers

Image

Image

Image

Image

Tie in a hank of CH

Image

Brush underbody with Super Glue, twist yarn and wrap forward to 2/3 mark; tie off/trim

Image

Image

Flatten body horizontally with pliers

Image

Image

Color top and sides of abdomen with brown marker

Image

Clean, stack, measure (tips to tail) a sparse clump of elk hair; tie in/trim, splay with pressure on thumbnail at base of wing

Image

Image

Dub thread/dub thorax

Image

Image

Tie in hackles at eye; on a fly this size you’ll probably need saddles to cover the distance ( you can use cape hackles tied in at the wing base and wrapped forward but it won’t be as bushy)

Image

Wrap hackles together to base of wing and back to tie-in; tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN
