kind of self-explanatory, right? We seem to have some impressive thread-wrappers that lurk around this board. let's try to keep your "first booger" posts at a minimum.

Renaflua Variant

Another cool fly I found on Lucian Vasies site. Pretty easy to tie; you can use a wide variety of body styles to go with the wing/hackle (I used a Dennis Potter style on this one). Here’s a nice video if you’re interested.

hook - WFC Model 3 #14
thread - Uni 8/0 rusty dun
tag - Danville flat wax chartreuse/UV resin
rib - Mirage Flash opal
body - UTC 140 tan

Dubbed/hackled body on this one. A bit too much UV resin on the head - holds the wing in place well enough but I have to work on proportions.

hook - WFC Model 3 #14
thread - Uni 8/0 rusty dun
tag - UTC 140 chartreuse/UV resin
rib - x-small wire silver
body - Ice Dub hare’s ear
body hackle - grizzly
wing - Congo Hair shiner tan

Lindstrøm Rena Caddis

Image

A simpler version of the Renaflua, Norwegian tyer Stephan Lindstrøm gets credit for this design. Original used a small chunk of melted hot glue to hold the wing in place; UV resin is much easier to control.

hook - WFC Model 3 #14
thread - Uni 8/0 rusty dun
body - Ice Dub hare’s ear
hackle - grizzly
wing - Congo Hair shiner tan

Start thread at 80% mark

Image

Tie in a hank of CH; trim butts and wrap to bend

Image

Dub thread/dub body to base of wing

Image

Image

Post wing

Image

Tie in hackle, shiny side out; wrap to top of post

Image

Add a little more dubbing at front

Image

Image

Wrap hackle down post; tie off at base of post (normally I double half-hitch at the base but I brain-farted and forgot so I just did it at the eye and dosed with Sally)

Image

Apply a little UV resin at the base of the wing

Image

Press down on the base with your finger and pull straight back on the wing. Hit it with the flashlight.

Roos Caddis Pupae (variation)

Image

From Swedish tyer Thomas Roos; used his fly as a base but it became an adventure in compound loop dubbing, swapping out the CdC body and back, mainly because my CDC supply is pretty much used up.

hook - WFC Model 3 #14
thread - MFC 8/0 sand
shuck/back - Congo Hair shiner tan
abdomen - Ice Dub hare’s ear
thorax - dubbing squirrel/hare’s ear
legs - deer hair

Start thread at 3/4 mark; tie in CH, wrap to bend

Image

Dub thread/dub abdomen to 3/4 mark

Image

Image

Separate some CH fibers for the shuck, pull the rest over the top, creating a hump; tie down/trim

Image

Image

Image

Create thread loop

Image

Clean, stack, measure (1.5 x gap width) some deer hair; insert in clip, trim to length, add some dubbing

Image

Wax thread loop, insert clip, trap hair/dubbing, spin loop

Image

Image

Image

Stroke fibers back, wrap loop, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Spundun Emerger

Originally planned this as a caddis, but then the name wouldn’t make any sense; whatever.

Clean, stack, measure (hook length) a sparse clump of deer hair

Image

Trim butts, tie in with 2 soft loops, tips facing forward, spin

Image

Image

Tie in CH behind butts, tie in rib; wrap to bend

Image

Image

Build up tapered body

Image

Rib body; tie off/trim, brush with Sally, trim shuck

Image

Image

Dub thread/dub thorax

Push hair back, evenly distributing around shank

Image

Grasp tips, create thread dam/head; half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Image

Muddled Egg Laying Caddis

Not a huge CdC wing fan but, in smaller sized muddlers like this, the lack of bulk at the tie-in area is nice.

Another simple but cool design from Swedish tyer Thomas Roos. I hackled the body a bit heavier than the example I saw on the interweb.

Being land born, it won’t skitter so much as thrash around. Partridge or hen pheasant would make a nice collar, too.

After looking at some other pics of the fly, it looks like I screwed the pooch on the first attempt. Playing around with a different tying sequence, I think this one is a bit closer to the original; forgot to photograph the steps, though.
