I think they fear wet waders (such as myself) who sometimes (more so these days) piss in the river upstream of where they are wading.

Or perhaps they've convinced themselves that a uniform consisting of waders, a fedora, and a vest with lots of tiny pockets is de rigueur for anyone who's truly serious about fly fishing.

That's my hypothesis anyway.

Regardless of the reason, I'm all for it because it helps to keep the fly shops in business.

At 6:30 in the morning, before the sun hits the water, that doesn’t feel so great on my old legs. Later in the day the waders keep the horseflies, mosquitos and brambles off; they might deflect a rattler, too. I do wet wade the little freestones up the road; never hit them before 10 in the morning and the biting flies are pretty much gone.
