FRIDAY, JULY 24 (continued)

We found some public land, pulled over, and enjoyed some stream side snacks.

Hagen decided to spend the rest of the float on the oars. He did a better job than I would have, but that’s not saying much.

With the float over, we ran shuttles and then trailered the boats. Hagen filled the boat net with his beer cans and emptied it into the dumpster. Then he propped the net against the outhouse wall and went inside. Lando turned to me and said, “You know he’s going to forget my net, right?”

Fsb had mentioned earlier in the week that his friend Harry was bringing elk meat, and I assumed that meant I wouldn’t have to cook one night. When we got back to camp, Harry pulled the elk from his cooler, put it on a table and then turned to me and said, “Well, there it is. Not sure what you’re going to do with it, but I’m sure you’ll think of something.”

I asked Harry when he shot the elk.

“Oh I didn’t shoot it. One of fsb’s friends gave it to me and asked me to bring it to him.”

There were some elk steaks and two packs of elk sausage, so I grilled the steaks, made taco meat out of the sausage, fried up some potatoes, and served it all with a one star Caesar salad.

Glad I checked in. Hi guys. I always hand a Hagen two beers at a time - otherwise it’s impossible to drive the boat.

SATURDAY, JULY 25

A storm moved in during the night, and come morning all of the rivers were blown.

Plan B was hashed out over breakfast burritos, and it was decided we’d fish a stillwater.

We drove to Lando’s house, attended to the landscaping, hooked up the carp slut to fsb’s rig, and hooked up the bass boat to Lando’s rig. Couldn’t find the gizmo that controlled the trolling motor, but decided to make do.

Hagen helped to secure one of the boats to the trailer, and then the trailer to the truck.

Kind of.

We stopped for gas.

Hagen paid for the gas and then went inside to buy snacks, while Lando properly secured the boat Hagen had trailered at the house.

On our way through town, Hagen pointed at a large building and said, ”What’s that?”

“That’s the museum. It’s pretty cool. You should check it out the next time you’re here.”

“Well why don’t we check it out now?”

“”It’s a pretty big museum, and it takes about two hours to see everything.”

“Two hours? Fuck that. I’ve never spent more than fifteen minutes in a museum.”

As we approached the edge of town, Hagen said, “I need to stop at the liquor store.”

We pulled into the parking lot, Hagen went in, and Lando and I waited in the truck.

And we waited.

And waited.

“Doesn’t want to spend more than fifteen minutes in a museum, but has no problem spending half an hour in a liquor store.”

Eventually he returned with a bunch of canned mixed drinks and a fifth of Tito’s vodka.

At some point we had to stop and have the boats inspected, and not long after that we pulled into the parking lot above the reservoir. It was packed.

We launched the boats, and soon we were on our way. I was with Lando and Hagen, while fsb and Sheldon captained the carp slut.

Hagen sucks on white nicotine pouches from the time he gets up until the time he goes to sleep. We’d been on the lake no more than a few minutes when he spit out the pouch in his mouth, opened the can in his pocket and said, “Fuck!” The can was empty. He frantically searched through the bag of stuff he’d brought on the boat, found another can, opened it, and screamed, “FUCK!” That one was empty two.

“I’ve got a dozen cans back at camp! What am I going to do?”

He ended up bumming half a pack of cigarettes from fsb, but he remained on edge for the rest of the day.

Fsb has always wanted to catch a carp from the carp slut, so Lando took him to a cove where he’d have a decent shot of fulfilling his dream.

After that Lando gave Hagen and I a short tour.

It was a very cool place.

Then we headed back to find fsb, and we were all happy to hear that he’d bagged his carp.

Had some snacks.

And then sat in the rain.

Lando then jumped in the carp slut with fsb and left me with Hagen. Pretty sure the two of them picked up some smallmouth. I tried to fish, but Hagen was more concerned with keeping the boat in the shade and drinking. I’m guessing he spilled as much as he drank, because the bottom of the boat was awash with booze.

Eventually it was time to go back.

Hagen came into the harbor pretty hot, and for reasons unknown docked the boat right next to an unoccupied police boat.

As he headed up to the truck he passed two officers coming down the ramp.

When they got to the dock one of them looked at me and said, “This boat reeks of alcohol. Who’s been driving it?”

Lando was already on the dock by then and said, “That’s my boat.” Fsb was right next to him, and he pointed to the carp slut and said, “And I’ve been driving that one.”

The cops took their drivers’ licenses and ran them for warrants and priors, and then tested each of them for booze. Lando went first.

Fsb followed.

Hagen stayed well hidden up in the parking lot.

On the way back we stopped at a lookout.

After leaving the lookout we stopped at a gas station so Hagen could buy some nicotine pouches, and once we got back to town Hagen and I went to the grocery store and he bought that night’s groceries.

When we got back to camp, Hagen mixed up a one star Caesar salad, and I made pizzas.

Hagen wanted avocado and pineapple on his pizza. He also decided to add some of the canned pineapple juice to his gin and tonic. He claimed everything was delicious. I’ll have to trust him.

Note to self: next year on pizza night, be sure to pick up some canned black olives, even though Hagen doesn’t like them.

I’d planned to make pasta and meatballs on this night as well, but we got back late, and I was tired. Had I made it, it would have looked like this.

SUNDAY, JULY 26

Got up and cooked up the last of the breakfast burritos.

Everyone was heading home except for fsb and I. I didn’t feel like packing everything up and then setting it all up again for one day, so Lando went and talked to the people who run the campground and managed to get us an extra day.

The plan for the day was to go and fish another lake, so before leaving camp we made up some meatloaf sandwiches.

We took Hagen back to Lando’s place so that he could clean up and change, and then dropped him off at the airport.

On the way to the lake we stopped and took in some of the local history.

Lando told us that the lake he was taking us to held grayling, and that the few times he’d been there he’d had the place pretty much to himself. That was not the case today, but once the mob of people at the put in finished unloading their kayaks, we launched the boat and found some privacy.

I fished for a while, then took the oars and watched Lando cast.

We both caught nothing.

When we got back to camp, Lando and fsb walked down to the river to fish, while I got started on the eggrolls.

I cooked up the filling - first time I’d made it - and it came out pretty good.

Once it cooled, it was time to start rolling using the wrappers Cornholio had given me.
12.JPG
12.JPG (118.93 KiB) Viewed 561 times
I’d watched some YouTube videos before the trip on how to make them, and it didn’t seem that difficult, yet I struggled. When Cornholio makes egg rolls, every one of them looks exactly the same. Perfect. Mine were all over the place: too fat, or too thin, or lopsided. I also kept splitting the wrappers.

Lando and fsb came back to camp, and while fsb mixed the salad, Lando tried his hand at the rolling table.
13.JPG

Then fsb decided to give it a shot, and after a couple of false starts he quickly cranked out the rest of themt.

“Kinda like rolling a doobie.”

MONDAY, JULY 27

Got up, packed up my shit, and crammed it all into the truck.

There was a shower at the campground, and by this time the scent of the hobo was strong with me, so I dug some quarters out of the ashtray and freshened up.

The river below camp had come back into shape, so Lando and fsb when down with their spray poles and tried to dredge something up.

Fsb was first on board with a dime-bright lake run.

I was ready to roll and had some stops I needed to make. Since fsb likes to take his time packing up I said goodbye to Lando and told fsb that I’d see him that evening somewhere in Montana. The plan was to meet fsb’s buddy Harry at a campsite somewhere on a river outside of a town that had three fly shops and a bar but nothing else. Seemed pretty straight forward.

Drove into town, filled the gas tank, bought groceries for the next few days, stopped by the fly shop and said hello to some people I only see once a year, and then hit the road.

A few hours later I stopped for gas and then said hello to Heero.
10.JPG

It was nice to briefly catch up with him.

After that I continued on my journey and eventually reached the river we were supposed to fish. It was packed with boats, rafts, tubes, kayaks, canoes… just about anything that could float, and every pullout was loaded with cars.

I found Harry and his friend Jeff in one of the extremely crowded campgrounds and reluctantly set up the kitchen. Had I known it would be like this I would have asked Heero for pointers on how to be a great big failure at one of his isolated lakes.

TUESDAY, JULY 28

I was done with making breakfasts, so after fsb had his morning coffee we took a drive to one of the fly shops and bought our Montana fishing licenses, some flies, ice, and some other shit we really didn’t need.

After that we drove back to camp, ran the shuttle with Harry and Jeff, and then launched.

Back at camp I grilled up some ribeyes and served them with mashed potatoes, mushroom gravy, and a one star salad.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 29

Then next morning Harry, fsb, Sheldon and I packed up camp and drove to a new river. We stopped by the local fly shop and asked them about spots to camp. The proprietor claimed the fish had been hammering chernobyl ants, so I bought a dozen, along with some other shit I really didn’t need.

We got to the campground and found two spaces side by side, so we took them.

Paying the fee proved challenging.
