EPA Rules Force Shell to Abandon Oil Drilling Plans

Shell Oil Company has announced it must scrap efforts to drill for oil this summer in the Arctic Ocean off the northern coast of Alaska. The decision comes following a ruling by the EPA’s Environmental Appeals Board to withhold critical air permits. The move has angered some in Congress and triggered a flurry of legislation aimed at stripping the EPA of its oil drilling oversight.

Sorry, had to use a fox link since they're the only one still reporting news these days.
Funny, the so-called-conservatives think the EPA is the problem.

The rest of us wonder why the 4 billion was tax deductible.

Fuck the freaky deeky Dutch and their "efforts"

Once upon a time, somebody in here who claims some expertise on the matter said "the oil companies do everything they can to prevent this kind of thing".

That continues to be a hilarious notion-
Oil from a ruptured ExxonMobil pipeline on the famed Yellowstone spread at least 15 miles beyond the initial leak – further than the oil company's original estimates.

Clean-up crews have yet to reach the break in the 12-inch pipeline because of historic flooding on the river, which is projected to peak on Tuesday.

...

More than 40,000 US gallons (151,416 litres) of oil gushed into the river before the pipeline was shut down late on Friday night.

...

The US department of transportation, which oversees pipeline safety, wrote to ExxonMobil in July last year, warning the company to take better precautions against corrosion and to update its emergency plan.

The letter warned the oil company it could be liable for up to $1m if it did not take steps to meet those safety standards. ExxonMobil received a second warning last February. The company said in March that it had addressed those concerns.

Finally....
BP is set to receive a record fine of between $3bn and $5bn (£1.9bn-£3.2bn) to settle criminal charges related to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, the BBC has learnt.

It will be the biggest criminal penalty in US history, BBC business editor Robert Peston says.

The settlement with the Department of Justice involves BP pleading guilty to criminal charges.

It is thought that up to four BP staff may be arrested, Robert Peston says.

Now if they would just bring some criminal charges for the financial meltdown instead of just the slap on the hand civil charges.
