Well done.. I've gone a few rounds with permit.. and little to nothing to show for it... Just wait till you hook a big tarpon... its one of those "i need to sit down for a minute" type situations..

Glad your first salt trip was a success.. :cool

God damn CH, that was real fucking good.

Real good.

Congrats on that rubber lipped fucker that eludes so many, must have been a retarded one, sorry, must have been a special needs fish. Their lives matter too.

Disregard the AJ and Lando chatter, they're both delicate in their own unique and individual ways. Anyone who can't digest a rancid batch of Mexican chorizo and then pony up for the salt life the next day is suspect I say.

Been lagging on my salty adventure reportage.
Guess I’ll just park it here.

Last year around almost the same dates, we went back to the same place:
Image
And instead of doing the packaged tour stuff, we just decided to do shit on our own. We went to a nearby island:
Image

Rented a golf cart and took in the sights:

Had some fun at the beach:

And of course, made arrangements to fish with Luis again for a couple of days.
It’s like déjà vu all over again:
Image

Luis took me to a different set of flats than last year. My nerves were a little more controlled and I managed to catch some baby poons:

And after a few more hook-ups, we got down to the business of permit hunting. I gave Luis first shot:
Image

We didn’t spot anything at that first flat so on to the next one. It was a little more fishy looking. And sure enough, we spotted a group of 4 fish cruising the edge of a weed bed. I made a so-so cast and one of the fish took pity on me and ate.
I caught me another permit!

Got back on the boat and motored over to a likely bonefish-holding spot to see if we can make it a 3-species day. Luis polled his ass off trying hard to get me a bone. But it wasn’t meant to be. This is my third time on this salty flats and I have yet to see a freakin’ bone.
The next couple of days were spent lounging around the hotel and beach. We also took a bus to the next city to the south.

Remnants of giant sea turtles laying eggs from the previous night:

Spent a day here:

Then on to my second day with Luis. We went straight to permit hunting:

Flat after flat….no sign of permit. But it was a glorious hunt:

We eventually gave up and went to the mangroves to chase some baby poons. I caught a few:

Another good day in the books with Luis. It’s funny how you get a certain sense of comfort and connection with somebody after spending a few days fishing with them. He dropped me off at the hotel and we said our goodbyes. He said he looked forward to seeing me again next year…
Me too…

We had such a great time exploring the nearby island a few days prior that we decided to do it again:

Our last day was spent lounging around the hotel and hanging out on the beach:

And just like that, it was time to head back home. Another great family trip in the books. And I even caught a few fish. Except for bones. Maybe next time.
