Dare I even ask? Car camping

Post by K_P » Sat Feb 16, 2019 11:41 pm

The bride and I are taking the camping thing in a new direction.

After spending an entire summer rehabbing an Alaskan slide-in camper four years ago, we're seriously looking into tenting it. It was a fun project, but the quarters are tight, and set-up/take-down is a PITA.

I could give a list of reasons, but they'd probably just bore you. What I'm most interested in is the experience of folks who already car camp. If you meet the following criteria, I'd like to hear your opinions please.

If you use:

Big (as is at least 8 foot by 8 foot by 6 foot tall) tent
Quality cots/mattresses for sore old bodies
Portable camp kitchen setup
Big vestibule on tent or separate cooking fly

...I'd be very interested in hearing your recommendations.

Thx,

KP

These cots with a therma rest on them are money ! Better sleep than my fancy mattress but that could just be from fresh air and being outdoors. I have used them at the house too though.

*2 on the cots. We just got some low lying ones and they’re surprisingly just as comfortable. Only problem is Nuya wants one now.

Having done the big tent, cooking area, etc set up before I’m not sure if your set up/ takedown will be any more enjoyable though.

The nice thing with the higher cots is you have storage underneath.

My only comment is that spring snows, a tent, a cold day in hip deep water followed by a cold dinner and repeat tomorrow drove me from my tent after 25+ years. The last time the spring snows were mid-june...

But I applaud your desire to simply, but cots seems like a must that I never had...good luck.
Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need-a homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends worth the name, someone to love and someone to love you, a cat, a dog and a pipe or two, enough to eat and enough to wear, and a little more than enough to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing.

I only tent camp. I bought a large teepee styled tent last year and it was perfect. Fit old man, my big ass, and a buddy comfortably, plus our gear. Dad used a cot (he won’t do that again, army days are long over) and we both used cheap $7 air mattresses from Walmart (highly recommend) five days was our longest outing to SF of Snake. It’s a bit unwieldy especially if the ground sucks for stakes. I try to make dad as comfy as possible so in April (Pyramid ya’ll) he’ll use an air mattress.

I use a floorless Scandinavian canvas tent that looks like a low, wide teepee. Called a Laavu. 12 ' diameter. You can buy one from NOrthern Laavu in Minnesota. I run a Four Dogs woodstove in it when I need the warmth. I can set it up in about 30 minutes with a short stepstool. I use a nicer cot that "Umbrellas" open with an Exped downmat 7 pad in the cold or just a wool blanket as a pad on milder nights. Wool blanket over down blanket on cold nights. Plenty of room for a comfortable chair and table inside with only 1 or 2 cots and adjusting airflow just involves lifting the tent hem. Your site needs good drainage with a floorless tent, but as long as it's dry inside, I just have a piece of carpet by the cot to step on to when I get up.

I used this setup on Slough Creek for a week during the Salmonfly hatch. Even when It rained or hailed, I could sit inside with a warm fire in the stove and make and Irish Coffee.

is more likely to put holes in the floor of your tent than this type of cot.

The terrain surrounding Pyramid is sand, rock, or a combination thereof. If I were to pitch anything other than a small, well-made, four-season tent there, especially in April, I wouldn’t put too much faith in stakes. The wind can be Wyoming-fierce, and I’ve seen big tents roll down the beach and out into the middle of the lake, like giant nylon tumbleweeds. Putting five gallon buckets filled with sand on the inside corners of a big tent might help keep it from blowing away, but based upon what I’ve seen I should emphasize the word “might.” Your results may vary.

You may consume a fair amount of alcohol, but that doesn't stop you from making some astute observations. . .
