There's a can collector dude that hitchhikes between my town and the next collecting cans from dumpsters and generally snearing in everyone's general direction. I used to give him rides to the highway intersection because I knew most people hated the old bastard and he's really just is battling mental illness. One day I picked him up and he saw I was wearing a Notre Dame hat. He told me "fuck them Irish, my Nole's are gonna fuck you guys up". I larfed, but then the Noles beat ND the very next week in heartbreaking fashion.

Haven't given that old bastard a ride since. Ftg...

So, you don't have any friends either?

What are you doing this weekend?

I don't know how I just found this.. but I dig it. The quality of our time on the water is usually a direct result of the people we are fishing with.. shitty company can ruin an otherwise great day.. and quick...

I guess i'll tell yall about Tucker.

I met tucker about 11 years ago. I had just moved to Charleston for school, and Tucker was a student at the Citadel, a Military type school with uniforms and strict rules and all that shit. Well they could only leave campus one day a week if they didn't have classes. Tucker decided to spend his off days hanging around the shop I was working in at the time.. Now Tuck is a large human.. 6'4" probly around 250lbs and solid.. but he's also one of the goofiest bastards i've ever met. To the point of making people around him physically uncomfortable, but I mean what are you going to do, the fucker is huge.. So anyway, he comes in like clockwork every wednesday to just hang around the shop, usually making jokes or weird noises. The other guys in the shop thought he was just too strange, but I thought he was funny so we would talk and be weirdo's together. We've been best friends ever since. We've traveled all over to fish together, and helped each other through alot of messy "life" bullshit. He's the guy who will tell me to my face when i'm being a dick, or talk me out of doing something self destructive.

I had a shitty girlfriend once, like life destroyingly bad. It took Tucker telling me to get rid of her ass for me to see it for myself... I dumped her the next day, tuck helped me roll in with my truck to load all my shit.. I was a groomsman in his wedding this year, and he will be the best man in mine next year. I'm not a very good friend when it comes to keeping in touch with people, I don't mean anything by it, but I just don't call or text people unless I have a reason to.. But Tucker is that friend that I can go months without a word to, and we will always pick right up like nothing ever happened.

We fish well together, and sometimes we fight like an old married couple.. But when it comes down to it, I know that If I put him in front of a fish, he will do his job.. thats important shit on a flats skiff.

I've thoroughly enjoyed hearing about yalls friends.. but reading some of these stories about losing or almost losing friends makes me think I need to be better about keeping up with my people.

To tucker and good fishing buddies everywhere..

my mate dave's a pain in the ass.

cons:

sometimes he baits up... sometimes he won't even bring a fly rod.
catches waaay more fish than I do.
never has any wonga.
constantly fucking owes me wonga.
always gives me the small 'half'.
if there's two beers left in his fridge they're both his.
talks incessantly about his late teens and early 20s. fuck me... I think I know what happened to him every fucking day for eight years.
his missus just had a stoopid baby interrupting our faithful humpday celebratories... prolly six years running.

pro:

he will drop everything to be by your side when things get proper fucked up.

dave is gay.
we fished a still water yesterday arvo.
I took him a choice of a 4 or 5wt graphite and a 5wt boo... he fished his spin rod.
he caught some 7" reddies. I caught fuck all.
he fed them (whole) to benson.
I worried all night that the little bastard was gonna puke up in the ute or later, on the carpet.
therefore benson had no tea.

dave fucks everything up for every cunt.

benson is fine. and strangely enough, bleck.
dave is the father of my only godchild and today I am honoured. and somewhat jrunk.

Anthony

He's made quite a few tr's appearances around here as bomber.

I met Anthony in 2015 when a mutual friend of ours put a steelhead trip together to B.C.. Anthony grew up in the neighboring town and is a few years older than I am. When I met him I was skeptical. This guy had his life together, wife, kid, steady job, all that noise, how could he be a steelhead guy? Well you get to know people pretty quick during a 36 hour drive, 10 days of fishing, camping, and then a 36 hour return home. We hit it off immediately and I soon learned this dude is driven. He lives to swing a fly, lives for a grab, and is as fucking stubborn as I am when it comes to sticking it out despite the torture we put ourselves through in the pursuit.

Since then, Anthony and I have taken numerous winter steelhead trips together. He's the first person I call when the weather looks right and one of the few dedicated enough to make it happen. We've fished summer run rivers together up and down the west coast, and again, you'd be hard pressed to find someone more driven to raise of fish to a surface fly.

Anthony's mom, an accomplished angler in her own right, stuck a two handed rod is his hands early and until fairly recently, that was all he knew. Nowadays, when not steelheading, stripping big flies for striper accounts for a lot of our time together. He's gotten his ass kicked by tarpon a few times and wont shut up about getting another shot now that his casting is better. Hell, i've even got him fishing stillwater for trout.

Aside from being a hell of an angler, Anthony is someone I am proud to know and call my friend. The type of guy who drives me to be a better person simply because of the quality of his character. He's an intelligent, kind hearted, empathetic, dude who is also a badass mother fucker you want by your side if shit ever hits the fan. Works as metro fire fighter in a big city and is part of a nationally deployed urban search and rescue team. Since I've know him he's been deployed numerous times all over the country. In August 2017, shortly after the birth of his daughter, Anthony and I were supposed to take a quick steelhead trip that had to be postponed. Hurricane Harvey made landfall and his USAR team was deployed for two weeks. Towards the end of their deployment, Irma made landfall and the team voluntarily headed to Florida for a few more weeks.

He's supposed to be on the North Umpqua this week but the fires out here had other plans. Some of the metro resources from his department are being utilized to fight wildland fires and wouldn't ya know it, Anthony decided to skip his vacation time.

He'd fit right in around here but the boards just aint his thing.

We lost our beloved George this week. After thoroughly enjoying 86 years on this rock, he laid down for a nap, as was usual, and didn't wake up. We should all be so lucky as to leave the way he did.

My brother-in-law's father, but he was like a dad to me and treated me like his own son. George lit up the room whenever and wherever he arrived. He always had a couple of new (or old) jokes to tell, and wanted to know what good things were happening in your life, whether he knew you or not. He was one of those guys, who if you only spent a couple of minutes with him, you didn't forget him, and he left you smiling.

I can only remember feeling he was disappointed in me one time, that being when I released the only two crappie caught on a mornings outing. The man liked his crappie and walleye.

I can't begin to count the fishing trips that we, his sons, and grandsons enjoyed together, peppered in to many other family gatherings. George paid for my first trip to Canada when I was a freshly-minted father, telling me to save my money for my child's future. One of his greatest joys was making other people happy. No, he was not a fly-fisherman, but he did love to fish, and fish with his friends. A frugal man, he still owned the first boat he ever bought.

His best friend since college football, Ron, fell and passed away a few months ago. We are pretty sure after reunions of the soul they are both sneaking away somewhere up there to go smoke some cigars, drink some scotch, and do a little fishing.

Ron and George on our last trip to Canada.

I didn’t know George, but I’m willing to bet he has the same backyard view upstairs. I’d also have to assume there’s crappies gettin’ fried back in the kitchen. Thanks for the words.

Also, LFTI tell Anthony we all say thanks for what he does. I forgot about this thread, ‘preciate you guys keeping it alive.
