The Chronicles of the Wooden Shoe- year one pg16

Something about wooden boats has always gotten me. They're expensive as all hell though, so I figured I'd exercise the other half of my brain, learn something new and take my time to make it look just the way it does when my eyes are closed. Plus, needed an excuse to listen to zeppelin too loud and drink beer in my garage with my buddies.

First, I hand scarfed the bottom and side panels to be able to glue four 4by8 pieces of marine ply together to get two 4by16 pieces

Plastic helps, since it would be hard to fish out of a skiff glued to your garage slab.

Epoxy prep

Thickened epoxy, then screwed together for adhesion. Wait one day.

(Not pictured) - glue additional strips to the sides for proper width.

Cut yer side panels, this'll be a low- pro.

Cut yer bottom panel

I'm starting to get curious how some 12 year will taste in it after catching a hopper eating trout on a cool summer evening.

...And fishing to large sophisticated spring trout during a gentleman's hatch will feel.. so I better get back to work.

Up next- Making the panels purty and ready to glass and epoxy. Ill post in here if anything notable happens.

Apparently the WEST fiberglass/ epoxy system is pretty tough, but as we all know there’s only one way to really find out. I’m doing 3 Layers of fiberglass on the bottom for extra durability. Luckily we don’t have too many rivers with can-openers around these parts or else I’d still be worrying about that instead of fishing.

I like how you laid the plane beside the plywood like it was used.

one time, when I was feeling all arty farty with andy warhol, we took a photo of cross pein hammer beside the eiffel tower.
and then the cc hit him with it.

and andy was all like 'what the fuck, man?'.
true story. look it up.

Unfortunately it was.. making the scarf joints with that small hand planer was probably the most time consuming and tedious part thus far.

Cool, I've got to take some pictures of a project I'm working on. BTW if you don't allready have all of your resins, fillers, glass mat, cloth etc, check out www.uscomposites.com . Even after paying shipping WAY less expensive than buying West Systems. I bought a gallon of resin with Med cure hardener, plus chopped glass and silica for thickener all with shipping for about what I would have paid for just the resin with West System... your shipping will probably be a little bit more being farther from Fla, but it should still save $$.

Red I can’t believe how much cheaper everything is. I’m painting the bottom and side panels anyways so don’t care if there’s any blush or if the cloth isn’t perfect. I owe you a beer or twelve. Thank you!

If you get blush, wash it off with warm water before you paint or it won't stick. Also, I'm using the 3-1 medium set. It's pretty darn slow and picky about mix ratio's especially in small batches. I ordered the dispenser pumps and they are handy but the one on the resin bottle doesn't put out as much so I've started doing my mix ratio's by weight...happened to have an old gram scale around... and I'm getting better, more consistent results. When I mix a small batch - I'm talking 3-6 oz. I'll warm it up with a hair dryer to get it to start to kick. Bigger batches it seems to kick ok on it's own.
