Thumbing Through Some SBSs

kind of self-explanatory, right? We seem to have some impressive thread-wrappers that lurk around this board. let's try to keep your "first booger" posts at a minimum.

Does possum make a stiff enough wing?
Somewhere between arctic fox and calftail. Not sure if it would fool educated fish but I was planning on throwing it at stupid spawning bows in some foothill lakes. Unfortunately, that’s not happening any time soon

Nowak’s Transitional Drake

Image

B.C. tyer Trevor Nowak’s pattern; body construction seems to have been borrowed from some of those mid-50’s Michigan drake/mayflies. Tied here as a green drake; change color/size to meet your needs

hook - Maruto 2312 #10
thread - UTC 140 olive
tail - pheasant tail
body - elk hair dyed olive
wing - Congo Hair Baitfish Grey
hackle - grizzly/olive
head - elk hair dyed olive

Mash barb/start thread at 2/3 mark; wrap to point above barb

Image

Measure (hook length) some p/t fibers; tie in/trim

Image

Image

Clean, stack, measure (tips gap width past bend) a clump of elk hair

Image

Tie in, spiral wrap to point above barb; return to tie-in, continue to eye

Image

Image

Tie in a clump of CH; divide with crossing wraps

Image

Image

Prep hackles, tie in at eye; wrap to wing and back, tie off/trim

Image

Image

Pull elk hair butts back, create thread dam

Image

Whip finish, SHHAN, trim head, wings, underside of hackle (replaced the bulb in the right-side lamp with a daylight LED; much happier with the last 3 pics)

Ostermann’s RUH Humpy

Image

RUH - Real Ungulate Hair; had to change the name since I used elk for the body/wing and moose for the tail in addition to the deer hair hackle. A single wing (semi-comparadun) would have saved some steps; change color/size to suit your needs.

hook – Dai Riki 300 #10
thread/rib - UTC 140 tan
tail - moose body hair
hump/wing - yearling elk hair bleached
body - dubbing dun
hackle - deer hair

Mash barb, start thread at 3/4 mark, wrap to bend

Image

Clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) a clump of moose body hair; tie in/trim

Image

Image

Clean, stack, measure (Shank lengthh) a healthy clump of elk; tie in at 3/4 mark

Image

Image

Trim out about 3/4 of the elk, wrap remainder to tail

Image

Image

Dub thread/dub body

Image

Image

Pull elk forward; tie down/trim butts

Image

Image

Image

Push wing back, set angle with thread dam in front

Image

Image

(Optional)
Split wing with thread wraps; post wings with wraps around each base

Image

Image

Create thread loop at front of body, wax heavily

Image

Clean and stack a clump of deer hair, insert in clip and distribute evenly; set length (approx 1.5 gap width), trim butts

Image

Insert clip in loop, release (even tips if necessary, spin

Image

Image

Image

Wrap “hackle”, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN (optional - trim hackle underneath); looks like the tail came up just a bit short but it should still balance the fly

hook - Dai Riki 135 #12
thread - Danville 6/0 tan
core - 7lb mono
tail - moose body hair (bleached)
body/head - 1mm foam tan
wing - Congo Hair white
hackle - grizzly dyed tan

Foamhead Skwala (Carnage variation)

hook - Dai Riki 135 #10
thread - Danville 6/0 yellow
core - 7lb mono
tail - moose body hair
body/head - 1mm foam olive
wing - Congo Hair Baitfish Grey
legs - medium rubber brown
indicator - 2mm foam orange

Since my friend in Missoula keeps me well-stocked with upland game pelts, I figured I could supply him with some stuff for the springtime hatches. Looks like the Root has come down from the big spike on Wednesday so maybe he can find some fish looking up. A #12 may seem a bit big for March Browns but the fly has a pretty small footprint on the water and the fish down there are as dumb as posts anyway.
