Procter’s Road Salt







A bit more sedate than some of his other patterns. The sharptail flank feathers have some neat markings; need to explore their possibilities a bit more.

Playing around with the sharpie feathers gave me an idea for a Jingler Elk Hair variant. Change color/size to suit your needs; partridge or a host of other feathers could be used, as well.

thread - UTC 140 tan
rib - x-small wire copper
body - Ice Dub hare's ear
body hackle - grizzly (undersize by 1)
wing - deer hair
shoulder hackle - sharptail grouse

head - 1mm foam tan


mash barb, start thread at head




tie in a strip of foam (about 1/2 gap width) at eye; fold back, tie down/trim








tie in rib, wrap to bend




dub thread/dub body






tie in hackle; wrap to bend






rib thru hackle; helicopter end, cover with thread, trim hackle tip




clean, stack, measure (tips to bend) a clump of deer hair; trimbutts/tie in






tie in grouse by tip; wrap, tie off/trim






tie in hackle




wrap, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Procter’s Olde 17 (variation)



A takeoff on an old Charles Cotton fly; kind of a Jingler comparadun. Swapped out original mallard flank tail for pheasant. Change color/size to suit your needs.

thread - UTC 70 woodduck
tail - bleached pheasant tail dyed golden olive (1Tbs Rit Golden Yellow/1 cup water overdyed for 30 seconds with 1 Tbs Rit Golden Yellow, 1/2 Tsp Rit Dark Green/1 cup water)
rib - tying thread doubled/twisted
body - dubbing hare's ear/tan
body hackle - grizzly dyed brownish olive (1Tbs Rit Tan/1 cup water)
wing - partridge


mash barb/start thread, wrap to bend




measure (hook length) some pt fibers, tie in/trim; double up thread for rib






dub thread/dub body to 2/3 mark






tie in hackle; wrap to tail






rib thru hackle, tie off/trim; trim out hackle underneath






tie in partridge at eye, return thread to 2/3 mark; wrap partridge back to 2/3 mark, tie off/trim






rib thread thru hackle while stroking fibers up

Grahame's Dark Olive







A pretty basic pattern. Took this as a chance to explore the use of dusky grouse feathers and dyeing to sooty olive; the dark grey feathers seemed to produce an acceptable shade.
