Manistee Hex



A pattern from the 50’s, tied originally by Josephine Sedlecky-Borsum. Again, swapped out yarn for poly on the body, added a wire rib and reversed direction on the palmered hackles.


hook - TMC 5212 #8
thread - Danville 6/0 pale yellow
tail - calftail white
ribbing - x-small wire gold
body/butt loop - Congo Hair Honey Mustard
body hackle - grizzly/brown (undersize by 2)
wing - calftail white
hackle - brown


Mash barb, start thread at 3/4 mark




Clean, stack, measure (2x hook gap) a clump of calftail; tie in/trim butts, wrap to bend








Clean, stack, measure (gap width past bend) a sparser clump of calftail; tie in/trim butts at wing butt junction






Tie in CH and rib




Create loop over tail; tie down




Wrap body to 2/3 mark; tie off/trim




Tie in hackles; wrap to bend






Rib thru hackle, helicopter end, cover with thread




Divide wing; set angle with thread dam up front and post up








Tie in hackle




Wrap hackle, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Deer Hair Drake (variation)



A few changes to Michigan tyer Ralph Hanna’s 1960’s creation; subbed moose body hair for pheasant tail on the back end and calftail for deer hair on the wing.

ribbing - tying thread
body - deer hair
wing - calftail white
hackle - grizzly

Mash barb, start thread at 3/4 mark




Clean, stack, measure (shank length) a clump of calftail; tie in/trim butts, cover with thread and wrap to bend








Clean, stack, measure (a little longer than the hook) a clump of moose body hair; tie in, wrap butts to wing butt junction, cover with thread






Clean, stack, measure (tips just past the bend) a clump of deer hair; trim to length, tie in, allowing hair to surround the shank






Spiral thread to bend; one tight wrap to flair the ends and return to tie-in






Crease wing clump with thumbnail, set angle with thread dam






Tie in hackle





Wrap hackle, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Extended Deer Hair Body Attractor



Found something similar on the interweb. Made a few adjustments but this isn’t the last iteration; think it could use a few more refinements.

tail/abdomen - deer hair
ribbing - tying thread
wing - deer hair
legs - medium rubber brown
hackle - grizzly/ginger


Create a loop in the mono; ash barb, start thread at midpoint, tie in mono






Clean, stack a clump of deer hair; trim butts/tie in, allowing the hair to surround the shank






Hook the loop onto the gallows




Spiral the thread up, take a couple firm turns at the top; return to the tie in






Trim mono and deer hair tips




Clean, stack, measure (tips to tail) a clump of deer hair; trim butts/tie in






Tie in legs




Tie in hackles




Wrap hackles, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN, trim out hackle underneath

Simple Foam Spruce Moth







A few minor changes to the Simple Foam Caddis; went with a deer hair wing and added an Ice Dub underwing for a little flash. Tan/grizzly should work, as well. Hope to put them to work next week.

Tie in CH facing forward over eye to 2/3 mark




Wrap pt forward to 2/3 mark; tie off/trim




Fold CH back, capture with wire rib, continue rib forward; tie down, helicopter end, cover with thread, trim shuck






Dub thread/dub thorax to 3/4 mark






Clean, stack, measure (hook length) a clump of deer hair; tie in/trim butts even with thorax






Tie in hackles





Wrap, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Rib body; helicopter end, cover with thread




Tie in CH; fold/tie down






Push hair back, evenly distributed around hook




Stroke hair back, tie down/pull tight






Tie in legs




Tie in indicator yarn




Whip finish, SHHAN, trim indicator, wing, shuck, legs




Trim out hair underneath




Put it in your box till next year
