Red Headed Stepchild SBS

kind of self-explanatory, right? We seem to have some impressive thread-wrappers that lurk around this board. let's try to keep your "first booger" posts at a minimum.

Red Headed Stepchild SBS

Post by ScottP » Tue Nov 13, 2012 3:26 pm

Probably not the kind of red-head you guys want to see; sorry. Starting to fill my tailwater boxes and wanted a change of pace from Pheasant Tails (already have a bunch of them); my version of Hogan Brown's has worked well and is about as simple and easy to tie as they come.

hook - Tiemco 3769 #18
thread - Gudebrod 10/0 brown
Tail - Pheasant tail fibers
body - tying thread
rib - UTC wire small red
thorax - peacock
legs - Krystal Flash red
flashback - Mylar tinsel medium opal
head - glass bead red

Mash down barb and slide bead on shank

Image

tie in thread, wrap to point above barb

Image

tie in pheasant tail fibers (shank length)

Image

tie in wire rib and wrap back to the head, trying to create a smooth body

Image

spiral wire rib forward, tie off and helicopter wire to break

Image

tie in tinsel flashback at the 60% mark

Image

tie in peacock and create thorax

Image

add Krystal Flash legs, near

Image

and far

Image

pull mylar tinsel over peacock, tie off, brush Sally, trim KF legs (pull them back and trim at spot where tail starts) and you're done.

Good thing they're quick ties; tend to lose a bunch of little flies to trout and whities when fishing tailwaters.

I have a weeklong trip to pack for tonight but this post inspired me into tying for a while. Thanks…I think.

I swear I have olive wire somewhere, but can't come up with it,
I can help you find that olive wire:

1. Go to the shop and buy some olive wire.
b. Return home.
7. Put newly procured wire into it's proper "place" at your tying desk.
p. Serendipitously find misplaced, previously purchased olive wire.

Pretty simple realy, works every time for me.
