Working on a golden plover substitute - first try dyeing some sharptail body feathers. May have to work on the shade a bit (too orange?); don't have any of the real thing to judge it against.






As a bonus, the aftershaft feather came out pretty neat; it'll find it's way onto some PMD flies.

I killed a goose once.


With a 1 wood. Self defense, swear to dog.

I about got attacked by one of those bastards last night. I doubt my 1wt would have done the same number as a 1 wood, but if it went to hand-to-wing/beak, I was prepared to maul that thing with no mercy.

The Kool Aid dye works great for feathers, I did a bunch of mallard flank in a pale blue (raspberry maybe?) and it worked great. I did not have much luck with Kool Aid on bucktails, though. I resorted to Rit liquid dye for those.

Searching for an equivalent to picric without the potential for pyrotechnics, I stumbled across a decent golden olive:

2 packs pineapple (only place I've found this is in Phoenix; seems to be a Southwestern thing)
1 pack lemon lime
2 drops yellow food coloring
1 drop red food coloring

Why not get the right kind of dye for feathers and hair, an acid dye. Dharma Acid dyes sell for under $2 for 2 OZ, a lot of dye and they have over 80 colors.

They do have a very nice selection of colors; thanks for the suggestion, but I'd have to order online and dyeing with stuff like that is a bit more involved, along with a greater potential for marital discord. Any screwups with Koolaid can be rectified with a Magic Sponge and a bit of elbow grease.

Ginger was the goal today (turmeric supposedly an option to Koolaid/Rit but we only have a little in the spice rack). A little Rit golden yellow and a drop of black - looked like greenish something in the dye bath but yielded a nice ginger/cinnamon.



This was pretty much undiluted; a bit more water would lighten things up a bit.
