Gravel Gertie



Took some cues for this vintage fly (the name came from a Dick Tracy character) from a couple Maine flyfishing blogs; swapped out some materials from the original for what I have on hand. A little weaving used for the vertical stripes on the body; spiraled in tandem is okay, too, but not so cool.

hook - Mustad 3665A #6
thread - Danville 6/0 black
tail - yarn orange
body - chenille white/black
throat - calftail dyed pink
wing - calftail white
topping - fox squirrel tail


mash barb, start thread, wrap to bend




comb out a hank of yarn; tie in/trim (gap width)






strip ends of chenille; tie in, one on top other on bottom






pull underside chenille forward, take a wrap with the other






switch places - pull the white forward on the underside, then take a wrap with the black






repeat to the front; tie off/trim




flip the fly over, tie in a sparse hank of pink calftail; nice soul patch






measure (tips to tail) a clump of white calftail; tie in/trim






measure (halfway up the wing) a sparse clump of fox squirrel tail




tie in/trim, whip finish, SHHAN

Warden's Worry 2







Washed it in the warm cycle and it shrunk 3 sizes. Since I didn't dye any small mallard in that batch, I subbed some partridge that I had. Wing was folded instead of matched quill segments; seemed to work okay.

Craft Store Cock Robin







Found a bag of dyed waterfowl feathers at the local craft store; kind of an orangish color on most of the feathers but some looked a bit like bronze mallard so I used that here; decent sub.
