Thumbing Through Some SBSs

kind of self-explanatory, right? We seem to have some impressive thread-wrappers that lurk around this board. let's try to keep your "first booger" posts at a minimum.

Woodright's Carnage Salmonfly

Image

The ones I saw ain't orange; the furniture marker gets the color close enough.

Image

Image

hook - Dai Riki 135 #6
thread - UTC 140 fluoro orange
core - 20lb mono
tail - moose body hair
abdomen - 2mm foam orange (colored with furniture marker pen)
wing - elk hair
thorax/head - 1mm foam orange (colored with furniture marker pen)
legs - medium rubber brown
indicator - 1mm foam orange

put a loop in the mono

Image

mash barb/start thread; brush shank with Super Glue and tie in mono

Image

clean, stack, measure (2.5x shank length) some moose body; trim butts/tie in, hook loop onto gallows

Image

Image

wrap tail up the mono

Image

and back down

Image

tie in foam strip (about 1/3 gap width; can't go too wide with 2mm stock or it won't lay properly on the core)

Image

brush underbody with Super Glue; wrap up with touching turns

Image

and back down with overlapping turns; tie off/trim

Image

clean, stack, measure (halfway between end of body and tips of tail) a clump of elk; trim butts/tie in

Image

Image

tie in 1mm foam strip (gap width) on underside with dyed side facing up

Image

repeat on top with dyed side facing down; butts should reach base of wing

Image

cover butts with thread

Image

pull foam on underside to the rear; tie down/trim

Image

Image

take one wrap over top of thorax to eye; fold top foam strip over eye to create head, tie down

Image

Image

cross wrap over thorax to wing base, pull foam back and tie down

Image

trim foam, tie in legs

Image

tie in indicator

Image

whip finish, SHHAN, trim legs

пуляголова мыло саранча

Image

Change color/size to suit your needs; on anything smaller, I'd switch to 1mm foam.

hook - Dai Riki 280 #8
thread - UTC 140 woodduck
body - Ice Dub pheasant tail
shellback/underwing - 2mm foam gold
legs - medium rubber cornsnake
head/wing - elk hair
indicator - 1mm foam orange

mash barb, cover front 1/4 of shank with thread

Image

clean, stack, measure (hook length) a clump of elk

Image

trim butts, tie in with 2 soft loops, pull tight and let it spin

Image

Image

tie in foam strip (gap width), wrap to bend

Image

dub thread/dub 1st segment

Image

Image

pull foam forward; tie down

Image

repeat

Image

Image

Image

and again

Image

Image

Image

tie in rear legs

Image

fold foam back, tie down

Image

push hair back (try to keep it evenly distributed around hook)

Image

gather and pull back; spin the thread tight and tie down

Image

Image

add front legs

Image

add indicator, whip finish, SHHAN

Image

trim out hair on underside

Image

Image

trim wing to length (hook bend), taper; trim legs

Image

Flyfischa's Caddis Emerger

Image

Found this one from Karsten Neben on the interweb; notional tying sequence. Combination LaFontaine Sparkle Emerger/EHC/Splitsville/Jingler; even with all that going on, it should scale down without too much trouble.

hook - WFC Model 11 #12
thread - UTC 70 grey brown
butt - antron dubbing green
shroud - sparkle yarn white
loop - tying thread
hackle - grizzly (hacklestacker style)
wing - deer hair
thorax - dubbing hare's ear
shoulder - partridge

mash barb, start thread at point above point; tie in yarn, wrap halfway down bend

Image

Image

Image

dub thread/dub butt

Image

Image

pull yarn forward, surrounding butt; push back just a little bit to puff out shroud and tie down

Image

Image

tie in loop; fold over itself and wrap to point above point

Image

tie in hackle, hook loop onto gallows

Image

wrap hackle up loop (thorax length), and back down; tie off at base/trim

Image

Image

stroke hackle fibers back

Image

clean, stack, measure (shank length) a clump of deer hair; trim butts/tie in

Image

Image

dub thread/dub thorax

Image

Image

pull hackle thru wing, dividing evenly; tie down/trim loop

Image

Image

prep partridge; tie in by tip

Image

Image

wrap shoulder; tie off/trim, whip finish, SHHAN

Quigley Cripple Parachute (variation)

Image

A few minor changes to the original. Tied here as a PMD; the synth wing is much more manageable in smaller sizes like this. Just playing around with some ideas; this probably won't be the last iteration.

hook - WFC Model 3 #16
thread - MFC 8/0 cream
tail - pheasant tail
shuck - sparkle yarn brown
rib - x-small wire copper
abdomen - pheasant tail
wing/wingpad - Congo Hair baitfish tan
thorax - dubbing pale yellow
hackle - ginger

mash barb, start thread, tie in rib, wrap to bend

Image

strip some pt fibers, measure (gap width), tie in

Image

Image

wrap to 2/3 mark; tie off/trim

Image

tie in yarn

Image

counterrib with wire, helicopter end/cover with thread; trim shuck (1/2 tail length)

Image

Image

tie in CH over eye

Image

dub thread/dub thorax

Image

Image

pull CH forward over thorax; tie down

Image

set wing angle with thread dam in front; post wing

Image

tie in hackle, wrap up post, shiny side out

Image

wrap hackle down post, cup side up

Image

half hitch x 2 at base of wing; trim hackle, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Image

trim wing

Quigley's Flag Dun

Image

Image

Image

Switched to thread for hackle loop instead of wing base like I did a while back. Tied here as an Adams/callibaetis (feel free to mark up the wing with a black Sharpie); change color/size to suit your needs.

hook - WFC Model 3 #14
thread - UTC 70 grey brown
shuck - Congo Hair brown
abdomen - tying thread
loop - tying thread
hackle - grizzly
thorax - dubbing hare's ear
wing - Congo Hair white

Splitsville Sparkle Dun

Image

I hate tying sparkle duns, mainly because I can't; this variation makes it almost fun. Tied here as an Adams/callibaetis; change color/size to suit your needs.

hook - WFC Model 3 #14
thread - UTC 140 grey brown
shuck - Congo Hair brown
abdomen - tying thread
loop - tying thread
hackle - grizzly
thorax - dubbing hare's ear (too lazy to dig out the muskrat)
wing - deer hair

start thread one eye width back from eye

Image

clean, stack, measure (hook length) a clump of deer hair; spin the thread tight and tie in

Image

Image

pull some fibers back, take a wrap thru, repeat, set wing angle with wraps in front and trim butts

Image

tie in CH at base of butts, fold over, wrap to bend; return to base of wing, creating tapered body, trim shuck (gap width)

Image

Image

create loop

Image

tie in hackle; insert loop onto gallows

Image

wrap hackle up (distance = back of thorax to eye)

Image

and back down; tie off at base/trim

Image

stroke fibers back

Image

dub thread/dub thorax; take a wrap or two in front of wing

Image

Image

pull hackle forward thru wing (splitting it in half and giving the fly it's name)

Image

tie hackle down, fold loop back, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Stenersen's CFO

Image

JS Stenersen's salute to petrochemical byproducts; this much foam and rubber makes me proud to be a carbon-based life form. A study in tying backwards; notional sequence.

hook - Dai Riki 280 #8
thread - UTC 140 woodduck
legs - medium rubber brown
rib - x-small wire copper
body - Ice Dub golden brown
hackle - brown (undersize by 2)
shellback - 2mm foam golden
wing - Congo Hair shiner tan
indicator - 2mm foam orange

mash barb start thread; wrap to bend

Image

tie in rear legs; fold and wrap to bend

Image

Image

tie in rib

Image

dub thread/dub body to 1 eye width from eye

Image

Image

tie in hackle; palmer rearwards to bend

Image

Image

capture tip of hackle with wire; continue ribbing forward, helicopter end/cover with thread

Image

measure (tip to bend) tapered foam strip (gap width); tie in at head

Image

Image

tie in indicator

Image

tie in front legs

Image

pull foam up, take a wrap back

Image

tie down

Image

tie in CH, fold, tie down; tie down indicator

Image

Image

again with the legs

Image

next wrap back

Image

Image

one more time; half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Image

Image

trim wing, trim legs, trim head

Image

Quimpy

Image

Quigley/Humpy (sounds better than Humgley); change color/size to suit your needs.

hook - Dai Riki 300 #8
thread - UTC 140 grey brown
tail - moose body hair
body - dubbing grey/brown
shellback/wing - deer hair
hackle - grizzly/ginger

mash barb/start thread; wrap to bend

Image

clean, stack, measure (shank length) a clump of moose body hair; tie in, wrap to 2/3 mark/trim

Image

Image

clean, stack, measure (hook length) a clump of deer hair; tie in at eye, set angle with a few wraps in front

Image

Image

trim out about 2/3 of the deer hair; continue wrapping remaining hair to the tail, keeping it on top of the shank (got this from Charlie Craven; whether he originated the idea is moot, it cuts down on bulk and makes the humping process a lot easier)

Image

Image

dub thread/dub body to 2/3 mark

Image

Image

pull the deer hair forward (gave it a very slight twist to counteract thread torque at tie down)

Image

tie down/trim butts

Image

Image

tie in hackle(s)

Image

wrap hackles, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

RWB Stonefly (variation)

Image

Found a pic on the interweb; swapped out the poly yarn body for foam, and the wire rib for a Sharpie (more floatation/less weight). Could just as easily be used as a hopper; change color/size to suit your needs.

hook - Dai Riki 280 #8
thread - UTC 140 yellow
feelers - medium rubber brown
abdomen - 1mm foam yellow (edge colored with brown Sharpie)
underwing/shellback - 2mm foam yellow
wing - deer hair
head - dubbing yellow
legs - medium rubber brown

mash barb/start thread at 2/3 mark; wrap to bend and back

Image

fold rubber over, tie down; pull tight to the rear, wrap to bend, trim tag end

Image

Image

cut foam strip, run marker along one edge; tie in with marked edge facing away

Image

Image

wrap forward (overlapping previous wrap) to 2/3 mark; tie off/trim

Image

measure (tip to bend) tapered 2mm foam strip (gap width); tie in with tag end forward over eye

Image

Image

clean, stack, measure (tips to bend) a clump of deer hair; tie in/trim butts

Image

Image

dub thread/dub head back to base of wing

Image

Image

pull foam back; tie down

Image

tie in legs; whip finish, SHHAN

Image

trim feelers, legs, foam
