When my longtime buddy Rusty retired, his fellow guides chipped in and got him a handmill for making bamboo rods. That was about 20 years ago, I first thought his second career building fine furniture got in the way because he only started building rods about two years ago. Always kidded him that I’d buy one, if I lived that long.
Well, it showed up this week...what a work of art.
Tried it out on the local casting pond.
Even with only about twenty minutes of very rusty casting, I could tell this one is amazing! It will layout perfectly with only 4’ of line out the tip and has the power to punch it 60-70’! It tracks perfectly straight, testament to Rusty’s attention to detail.
I finally realized he’s spent the last twenty researching and studying rod making. He is just barely housebroke, but his intelligence level is off the charts...only guide I’ve ever met that subscribed to THe Economist.
