Basically just weight. They claim they are as heavy as bead chain, and maybe it is, but it feels and acts lighter than bead chain. That's why I add more weight to the fly. The only time I ever have issues with them "digging" into the water when I try to pick up to cast seems to be if I'm trying to make a sidearm cast with the rod low to the water. They'll sometimes dig in then.
