Unlike Johnny, I can't claim to have been everywhere, but I do appreciate a good road trip.

Big thanks to Lando and his better half for hosting such a cool gathering and for all the warm hospitality. But most of all, an even bigger thanks to Average Joe, the hardest working man in camp. If he wasn’t cooking you something to eat, he was prepping it or working on prepping the next meal, making you a to go lunch or, planning the meal after that. Thanks Joe for all the fine cuisine.

Me and the dog had about 6 days to play with before the Luau and left home after work around 5:00 in the evening prior to the first day and knocked out about 3.5 hours of driving and crashed in the van at a spot I like right off I-84. The next day, after about 8 more hours of driving, we made it to WY and stopped at the first spot that looked good enough to park for the night and were treated to a nice sunset and some soft lighting. After letting out a big sigh of relief for being done driving for the day, I cracked a cold beer, fed the red dog and made sure that she had a big bowl of water.

With all this time before the Luau and on Lando’s suggestion, I played the WY Cuttthroat Slam. If your not familiar with it, look it up on the WY Game and Fish site. They'll issue you a cool certificate with nice renditions of each of the four species on it. I started with the Bonneville and caught one on my second cast at the first little trib I stopped at.

After that, I hit the bigger trib and caught several more.

Then, it was on to a different water shed to catch the Colorado Cutt….

It all seemed easy enough.

Next up was the fine spotted Snake River Cutt. I found a beautiful river and fished it up high in the head waters. This was one of those streams that will stand out in my mind for a while. The area that I fished had a gentle gradient, so it was easy to walk and wade with great pools and the quality and size of the fish was top notch, especially considering how high up in the system I fished it. I have to say, that this is my favorite way to trout fish. Just finding a place to drop in and walking upstream with no idea of what lies around the next corner. I didn't see anyone else fishing that day.

At this point, it had been about about 4 days since my last shower. Earlier that day, I had filled my solar shower bag up at a spring and put it on top of the black Thule box. By the time I got off the river it had heated up to 104*F. So I hung it from a tree and enjoyed a refreshing shower and did some laundry.

After that, we started making our way towards Cody. We stopped on the way and fished one other river that I’d been to before, plus one of it's tribs and spent the night.

First day fishing at the Luau, red dog and I took a drive and fished with Chris. We caught several Yellowstone Cutts to complete the Slam.

The clouds finally burned off, so we sat down to take a break and watch Chris do his thing. I could tell that red dog was a little perplexed. So I asked her, “what’s up girl?”

“Dad, why does that guy fish like that?”

“It’s called Euro nymphing, his soul is broken. Don't ask him how things are going, he'll just say 21 or some shit."

"That’s fucked up Dad, I can’t watch”.

“Yeah" I said, "just look away”……..

The next day we floated with Steamin” and his buddy Nolan. It was a fun float and we caught some nice fish. The only disappointment was that there was no Billy Squire music. Otherwise, big thanks to Colton and Nolan for inviting us along.

Honestly, I don't know why we all don't live in Wyoming, although that Po Thead guy might have a strong counter argument.

Thanks again Lando and AJ. Me and red dog had a good time and it was nice to meet everyone.

Cheers.

God damn!

I might need to leave the northern lands next summer for a short stint… I’ll bring the seafood and be Joe’s sous chef for a few days.

1/1 (on binary scale with 0 being worst and 1 being best). Had fun. Will do again. Nice meeting people I havent yet.

Highlight of trip for me:

'Ok, NOW you can play your music'.

-Joe

I already had the Pumpkins playing when he said it, but still.
